Following the report of her casting, no director has been attached to the project yet, though it seems obvious that Warner Bros should hire this Oscar-nominated female director. Interestingly enough, they have already previously disappointed her following the cancelation of her DC movie project.

Ava DuVernay Should Direct Warner Bros’ Supergirl Movie

In a report from Deadline in 2018, Warner Bros was looking to hire a female filmmaker to helm an upcoming Supergirl movie that has been brewing at the headquarters for quite some time. As the outlet noted:

The studio has been very vocal about wanting to employ another female director for yet, another strong female superhero — Supergirl.”

There were a bunch of names suggested to spearhead the project, and one of them was Ava DuVernay. At the time, she was tapped to direct New Gods under Zack Snyder’s DCEU but was scrapped long before it was started. She told SiriusXM:

I loved New Gods which is the project that got axed. The studio decided that they did not want to pursue a certain part of that comic world based on some things that were going on with another film in that world, so before I even was able to complete my script with Tom King, they axed it.”

It was suggested that the project was not shelved because James Gunn was planning to introduce the revamped DC Universe, but due to narrative conflicts with Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

DuVernay continued working on a series that involved DC characters despite the cancelation of New Gods. She went on to direct The CW’s Naomi and HBO Max’s DMZ, both ran for one season only.

Given her experience with directing superhero shows, the studio should not waste this director’s talent and brilliance. In fact, the 51-year-old writer and producer has earned numerous accolades, such as Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations as well as Primetime Emmy Award and BAFTA Film Award.

Needless to say, DuVernay will definitely do a great job helming Milly Alcock’s upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Ava DuVernay On Directing Superhero Movies

In an interview via Entertainment Weekly, Ava DuVernay talked about her desire to direct superhero movies. She remarked that she’s willing to do one as long as it is the narrative she wanted to tell:

The right one, yeah. I mean, is it a huge goal that I’m thinking about and striving for? No. But if there was the right story, absolutely. I think it’s important that our heroes reflect more than one kind of person.”

Supergirl is definitely a story that DuVernay should translate on the big screen. Her conviction to tell the truth about a character while giving it a multifaceted interpretation is just what Kara Zor-El should be.

Additionally, Supergirl is rumored to have an appearance in James Gunn’s Superman Legacy, which is very exciting but is merely speculation. Hopefully, the DC Studios boss will look into hiring DuVernay to lead the upcoming stand-alone project.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow under DCU’s Gods and Monsters: Chapter One still awaits a release date.
