Old School RuneScape is an RPG title that was aimed at giving new players a chance to experience one of the earliest MMO experiences while keeping the old fanbase alive. Since 2013, the game has had millions of users hop online, but as of late, there’s a huge threat to these numbers.
According to the studio, illegal bots (and associated accounts) are banned more often than not. But, even after all the effort that’s being put into making the game a healthier ecosystem, the truth is that bots are going to exist. And, that’s something fans will have to be okay with.
Jagex decides to take this ahead with complete honesty with the community
Recently, user Ngen_Az shared a snippet of an article on Reddit that brought to light something the fans weren’t expecting to see. According to the post, a few sentences were highlighted that showed the studio’s (Jagex) take on illegal bots and how they ruin Old School RuneScape’s experience for everyone.
The community manager, JagexAyiza quickly posted a response to this, in an attempt to clarify certain things. This included a big paragraph about the reality of the situation and how the company plans to deal with the problems at hand:
We are banning bots, more than we ever have before. But the reality is, and this is something we’ve said time and time again, it’s an arms race. As fast as we ban them, new bots are made. We’re constantly working to keep ahead of this race, and we ARE working on bigger initiatives to tackle botting as a whole, although we aren’t ready discuss the details of this just yet.
It was also put into words how the long-term goal for this entire project was to make the game’s ecosystem much better, and players can expect this to happen later this year with updates. However, at the time of writing, the Old School RuneScape is a little skeptical about the entire ecosystem.
Bots are ruining the fun for both, old and new Old School RuneScape players
Over multiple forums, players have been complaining about how bots have been ruining the experience. At its core, bot accounts have superhuman powers of rapidly clicking through high-level scenarios which lets them level up quickly.
This completely shatters the morale of those trying to play honestly. RuneScape has a long legacy that has only survived because of faithful fans and a company that is trying to do its best to keep things up and running.
Bot accounts make these aspects difficult to sustain, and we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
In the meantime, what are your thoughts on how the company is tackling this situation? Do you think things will eventually get fixed? Let us know in the comments below.
