Before delving into Snyder’s explanation, a question might arise: Why does “Rebel Moon” necessitate an alternative version? The director of “Man of Steel” isn’t dealing with a Warner Bros. superhero production confined by stringent theatrical distribution mandates. Notably, “Rebel Moon,” designed for Netflix, is already structured as a two-part cinematic release.

Martin Scorsese Isn’t A Big Fan Of Director’s Cut

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that audiences haven’t had a glimpse of Rebel Moon as yet. Typically, director’s cuts are perceived as responses aiming to rectify and enhance, offering enthusiasts the hope of an upgraded experience. Could it be that Zack Snyder’s admirers find “Rebel Moon” flawless in its current form?

In the past, Snyder has crafted director’s or extended editions for movies such as 2017’s Justice League, 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, 2011’s Sucker Punch (with plans for yet another Sucker Punch edit in the pipeline), and 2009’s Watchmen.

It’s an approach to filmmaking that stands in contrast to the classical method. Martin Scorsese, in a 2019 interview with EW, shed light on this when questioned about the possibility of creating a director’s cut for one of his films:

“No, no, no, no, no! The director’s cut is the film that’s released — unless it’s been taken away from the director by the financiers and the studio. [The director] has made their decisions based on the process they were going through at the time. There could be money issues, there could be somebody that dies [while making] the picture, the studio changes heads and the next person hates it. Sometimes [a director says], ‘I wish I could go back and put it all back together.’ All these things happen. But I do think once the die is cast, you have to go with it and say, ‘That’s the movie I made under those circumstances.'”

Nevertheless, it can be contended that Snyder’s approach holds equal validity. Many other renowned directors have released their director’s cut.

Zack Snyder Isn’t Alone In Releasing Director’s Cuts

Peter Jackson unveiled the celebrated Extended Editions of his Oscar-triumphant The Lord of the Rings trilogy, while George Lucas presented diverse iterations of his initial Star Wars trilogy (acknowledging a blend of outcomes).

However, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings were not initially crafted to cater to the boundless expanse of streaming. Hence, there’s an element of uncertainty surrounding the Rebel Moon strategy.

The initial installment bears the title A Child of Fire, while the subsequent part is named The Scargiver. The curtain rises on the first chapter of Rebel Moon on Netflix come December 22, with the second chapter making its debut on April 19, 2024. The cast includes Sofia Boutella in the role of Kora. The ensemble also features Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, Michiel Huisman, Charlie Hunnam, E. Duffy, and Djimon Hounsou.
