While most of these mysteries will get answered eventually down the line, fans can’t wait to find out how things are going to work out. One such mystery that has popped up since the time skip is about Zoro’s left eye. One of the most important characters of the series, Zoro, has a scar on his left eye because of which he can’t open that eye.

As Eiichiro Oda is the king of foreshadowing, fans speculate that his hidden left eye has some sort of meaning to it, and it will be revealed in the future. While it can all be a hoax, fans believe that Oda has big plans for Zoro’s missing eye, as he planned to scar his left eye from the very beginning of One Piece.

What Happened to Zoro’s Left Eye?

The first time the Straw Hat Pirates arrived in the Sabaody Archipelago, the Navy attacked them. Bartholomew Kuma, however, saved them by sending the Straw Hat crew to other locations. Bartholomew Kuma decided to send Zoro to Kuraigana Island. There, he received training from Dracule Mihawk, the World’s Strongest Swordsman.

In addition to learning how to use Haki, Zoro also achieved amazing proficiency with his sword techniques. Zoro’s left eye, on the other hand, was injured at some point. Although Zoro’s left eye has been closed ever since, it is still unclear exactly what happened that led to Zoro, one of the strongest swordsmen, getting such a big injury and that too while “training”.

Fans were taken aback to see Zoro’s left eye when he returned to the Sabaody Archipelago following an extended absence of two years. This led to fans theorizing various notions about how Zoro’s left eye will be opened when he needs a power-up against a strong enemy, which, while interesting, is quite stereotypical to happen to an anime character.

It is well known that, back in the early days of One Piece, sometime between 1997 and 2000, Oda had already confided to his associate that Zoro would lose his eye. He questioned Oda in 2021 about how it had happened, but he declined to respond.

If the matter had been trivial, Oda could have just replied, but the fact that he chose not to suggests that there might be more to it. Additionally, the fact that Oda had already prepared this for Zoro’s character indicates that he had ambitious plans for him in the future. While One Piece has entered its final arc, fans won’t have to wait much for the truth about Zoro’s missing eye to come out.
