The cook of the Straw Hat Pirates, Vinsmoke Sanji, or as the One Piece world knows him, Black Leg Sanji, is one of the strongest characters that Eiichiro Oda has presented in the series. Wanting to find the All Blue, Sanji joined Luffy in his journey to become the King of the Pirates, and now he is considered one of the wings of the Future Pirate King.

Over the course of almost 30 years, Sanji has showcased some incredible powers that have helped him defeat countless enemies. Be it Haki or the Germa 66 mutation, Sanji has proved his worth as a member of the Yonko’s crew. However, recently, Sanji has achieved a milestone that defies the laws of One Piece.

He was able to stop and split a light-based attack, which is considered to be impossible in the One Piece world. He claimed it to be the power of love, which fans initially believed was just an expression, but Oda has hinted in the series, that the power of love is a real thing and might be completely different from Haki or Devil Fruit powers.

Sanji’s Power of Love Explained

In One Piece chapter 1107 when Kizaru resolved to target Vegapunk and Bonney with his light-based abilities Sanji came just in time and kicked aside Kizaru’s light beam, shocking everyone. Sanji then revealed that Light had no chance against his power of love. His power of love originated from his mother.

Sanji and his brothers were experimented on while they were still in their mother’s womb. Sanji was the only one of the four brothers who was born normally and without any powers, but the one thing that he gained was emotions and love. Sanji, unlike his brothers, is an extremely emotional guy, which he inherited from his mother’s love.

This love manifests itself in unique ways. The first example of this was seen when Sanji showed resistance to fire while using his attacks. Although the power is derived from his genetic changes, it is strengthened by the power of love he wields. This power of love has helped Sanji multiple times and Eiichiro Oda has even hinted at it in the series.

Eiichiro Oda Hinted The Power of Love in One Piece

Eiichiro Oda has mentioned the power of love multiple times in the SBS volumes of One Piece. Sanji completely displayed these abilities for the first time in the fight against Jabra during the Enies Lobby arc. When Oda was asked about this on SBS, he explained that it was conceivable because the sparks in his heart, also referred to as the flames of desire, were burning even hotter.

He even highlighted the power of love in SBS Volume 62 when fans questioned him about how Garp could attack Luffy even though Luffy is made of rubber. In response to this query, Oda stated that, in this specific case, Garp was able to harm Luffy with the power of love and he did not use Haki for it.

This makes it abundantly evident that the power of love is a real ability in One Piece and just like Haki, Devil Fruits, and other abilities, the Power of Love also has a serious impact in a battle. Sanji has strengthened his power of love over time, and he is bound to get much stronger as the story of One Piece moves further.
