Blackbeard could be a member of an extinct race in One Piece

Chapter #1107 of One Piece reveals the Blackbeard Pirates, particularly the Titanic Captains Catarina Devon and Van Augur, have arrived at Egghead Island. The exchange between Catarina and Saturn revealed that Blackbeard might be one of the members of the extinct race.
In chapter #951 of One Piece, Big Mom mentions three races that cannot be found in her territory: the Giants, the Lunarians, and a third race whose name was not revealed but was claimed to have been lost in the mist of time.
Blackbeard being a member of a special lineage might explain his characteristics, such as not sleeping much as a child and his ability to draw powers from two devil fruits, something that no other character can achieve.
