How One Pizza Guy Made Supernatural Stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki Feel Insecure About Their Acting

Released in 2005, the long-running dark fantasy-horror series Supernatural drew massive attention with its stellar cast and brilliant storyline. Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles starred as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester in the Eric Kripke-created cult show.

The two share a dynamic off-screen just like their on-screen counterparts that highlight their camaraderie and brotherhood. In an interview with EW, they shared a hilarious incident that involves a pizza guy.

Remember that iconic Monster Movie episode from Supernatural’s fifth season? The one where Sam and Dean face a shapeshifter with a penchant for classic movie monsters?

The episode, filmed in black and white as an homage to classic horror, throws the Winchester brothers at a monstrous foe who enjoys transforming into Dracula, the Wolfman, and more. But amidst the chills and monster-hunting thrills, a seemingly mundane moment stole the show.

The set designer, Jerry Wanek, played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, crafting the intricate dungeon set that contrasted sharply with the ordinary suburban household above. As the doorbell rang, signaling the arrival of the pizza guy, viewers were treated to a moment of comedic brilliance amidst the darkness.

Here’s where things get interesting. Series creator Eric Kripke and executive producer Robert Singer highlight the genius of the scene. The humor lies not just in the absurdity of a monster ordering pizza but in the deadpan delivery of the pizza guy himself.

We were so specific about how we wanted the Dracula shapeshifter to react to the pizza guy and the way he’s scared when he says, “Is there garlic on the pizza?” And then the way the pizza guy’s so bored and over it: “Did you order garlic?” And then he says, “No!” It’s the way that he’s so bored of this Dracula at the door,” says Kripke.

For Ackles and Padalecki, watching this scene unfold was a revelation. Jared Padalecki recalled a moment shared with Ackles back in 2008 when they first watched the episode together. As they witnessed the pizza guy’s effortless performance, a realization dawned upon them – he was “way better than he needs to be.”

I think Jensen and I must’ve watched this episode together in 2008 because I remember us looking at each other and going like, ‘Oh my god, [the pizza guy] is way better than he needs to be!’” added Padalecki.

Monster Movie may be remembered for its homage to classic horror and its gripping storyline, but it’s the unexpected brilliance of a pizza delivery guy that left an indelible mark on Supernatural’s leading stars.

It’s not that I haven’t seriously considered doing it, my single answer is yes. It’s timing. It’s availability,” Padalecki said. He continued,

Jensen and I feel so strongly about our show that we had for 15 years together that we don’t wanna just do it, just to do it. We don’t wanna go, ‘Hey, I have two weeks off in June. Let’s go ahead and shoot 10 pages a day, just so we can have some more content.’”

Supernatural aired on the WB and the CW for 15 seasons (and 327 episodes) from 2005 to 2020. Padalecki said,

If and when Supernatural comes back, it’s going to be a labor of love, and we’re gonna put every hour in to make sure that it’s as true to the canon and to the fandom and to the story and to the characters as possible.”

Meanwhile, CW’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz, in a new chat with TVLine, said that as of now, there are not any formal talks regarding the continuation of the beloved show.
