Elden Ring is an adventure that may not tell you much on the surface but is filled with lore that adds a layer of depth to the game every time you think about it. Among the many tales and monstrosities within the Lands Between, there are certain characters who have been wronged so much, that they’re beyond any mercy if they are to cross paths again with the Tarnished.
One such character might be Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. She’s one of the earlier bosses in Elden Ring, and it can be a devastating fight if you aren’t prepared for the second phase. However, her story is even more hard-hitting, even though she isn’t in the best mental state when we meet her for the first time.
Note: Minor spoilers for Elden Ring
Rennala’s possible return in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
Out of all the bosses you go against in Elden Ring, Rennala is one of the few who actually survives the encounter. After defeating her, you can speak with her as well as freely roam around her vicinity. Upon defeat, she becomes a friendly NPC who grants the Rebirth ability which allows players to reset their stats and switch up their playstyle. Also, they’re now allowed to change their appearance.
However, it’s important to consider how facing defeat might just have made things worse for Rennala. You see, in the wake of betrayal and heartbreak, we fight Rennala at her worst. In fact, her magic and dignity were the only thing keeping her in place. With the surprise entry of her daughter, Ranni, in the fight, you can notice how any and every kind of help towards Rennala’s situation still works against her.
How she sees the world may be deluded, but fighting and defeating her may have just gotten her back to reality. And, this may not be the best thing for the Tarnished. After all, this allows her to rise as a sorceress again and use the powers of the full moon to reclaim her narrative.
What went wrong with her in the first place?
Rennala grew up wondering about the stars and became the best at what she did; lunar magic. As she became competent and respected, she established the house of Caria. This encouraged the Glinstone Knights to fight by her side, and Carian Knights became one of the most sought-after warriors in the Lands Between.
Later on, after Queen Marika took it upon herself to restore the new world order, the red-haired Radagon was sent into battle to fight against Rennala. However, the battlefield soon turned into the foundations of newfound love, and Radagon and Rennala got married. They had three children; Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard.
Unfortunately, Radagon betrayed her, leaving her for Queen Marika. Not knowing how to deal with this heartbreak, Rennala eventually fell from grace, locked up in her own chambers. She held on to an amber egg, the last substance of memory of Radagon she’d associated with. When the Tarnished crosses paths with Rennala, we can see her holding on to it, while also imperfectly rebirthing Juvenile Scholars around her.
If she does make a comeback in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, there can be a lot of references to Ranni (and her storyline, among certain endings) and how Tarnished eventually went against Radagon to become an Elden Lord. Furthermore, she’ll likely be filled with more terror and hate for everything that went down after we went against her. What do you think of Rennala’s possible return in Elden Ring’s DLC?
