Marvel has its fair share of cosmic villains, the kind who assemble the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in an instant. However, there is a villain who has managed to cement himself as a foe worth uniting these factions, and fans have cast Cillian Murphy for the role.

Doctor Doom might be the monarch of an East European country, but the character has proven to be more than a match for the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Being a competent scientist and a sorcerer, the character has managed some incredible feats, putting him above the likes of Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Hank McCoy and Hank Pym regarding intelligence, power and skill.

Doctor Doom has taken on- and defeated- the Beyonder

The Beyonder
The Beyonder

The Beyonder is arguably one of the strongest entities in the MCU. The character is described as omniscient and nigh-omnipotent, threatening anyone who dares to face him. Doctor Doom not only managed to match the character in a fight but also defeated him by draining his power. In Secret Wars #10, titled Death to the Beyonder, Doom ends up fighting Beyonder, whom he terms the real enemy. In a monologue to all the other heroes, Doom relays the Beyonder’s crimes and slays him when his guard is down, taking full advantage of a moment of weakness in a manner that only Doctor Doom can.

Doctor Doom has routinely wreaked havoc on some of Marvel’s biggest names, governing his small nation with an iron fist, but keeping it safe from some of the biggest threats in the Marvel Multiverse. No wonder that he ended up becoming God Emperor Doom in Battlewrold, albeit eventually falling to govern the patchwork of Earths. Doom has routinely wielded powers like that of the Beyonder and the Power Cosmic, usually requiring the efforts of multiple super-teams to take him down. The character is expected to take up the mantle of the next big antagonist in the MCU, appearing as the villain in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Fans are clamouring to see Doctor Doom in the MCU, played by Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer

The MCU has a villain problem that it has managed to solve just once. Aside from Loki, every villain that has been introduced in the MCU has been killed off just after a single appearance, destroying any potential they have of returning. Even greater characters like Hela and Killmonger did not see a second appearance, despite their critically acclaimed performances. However, just like with Loki, Doctor Doom could be a recurring villain in the MCU.

Fans specifically want Cillian Murphy of Oppenheimer fame to play the character of Victor von Doom. The actor has already proven himself to be able to play a leader in his show Peaky Blinders, while also playing a genius burdened with knowledge in Oppenheimer. This won’t be the actor’s first endeavour playing a villain either, having played Scarecrow for Nolan’s Batman Begins. Murphy has the acting chops to pull off a role like that of Doctor Doom, and would essentially be a villain who does not have to go out after just one battle or be reformed to stick around.
