Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie have engaged in a friendly competition ever since the Barbenheimer phenomenon at the theaters. Barbie managed to outperform Oppenheimer at the box office and received nine nominations at the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Nolan fans may feel a bit frustrated as Oppenheimer continuously trails behind the Margot Robbie-led film, but it still manages an impressive eight nominations.

Barbie secured nine nominations at the ongoing Golden Globe Awards. The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical / Comedy and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Margot Robbie received a Best Actress nod, while Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Greta Gerwig earned two nominations, one for Best Director and another for Best Screenplay, along with her husband Noah Baumbach. The film also received three Best Original Song nominations.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has also performed well with eight nominations but trails behind Barbie’s 9. The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Box Office Achievement. Nolan received nominations for Best Director and Screenplay, while actors Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr. were all nominated for different acting categories. The film also earned a nod for Best Original Score.
Fans on X rallied in support of Barbie after the impressive nine nods for the film. Fans positively noted that the film deserves a lot of love during the awards season. One fan commented that Barbie’s nods were predictable given the popularity of the film. However, some critics argue that the film is overhyped. Another Barbie fan was more pessimistic, suggesting that the film might not win awards due to the other deserving contenders.

Gerwig earlier shared her excitement over Barbie’s nine nominations, stating, “[I] can’t wait to bring the Barbie party to the Globes.” (via NBC). Despite its leading nominations, it appears that Oppenheimer finally got a break and beat Barbie at the Awards.

As of the current update, Oppenheimer has won four out of its seven announced categories, while Barbie only managed to secure two out of its eight announced categories. Barbie was notably snubbed in all the major categories, winning only in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category and the Best Original Song category. Billie Eilish and Finneas won the latter award for the number, What Was I Made For?
Oppenheimer bagged the awards for Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson. As of the latest update, both films are still awaiting results in the Best Picture category – Barbie in Musical/Comedy and Oppenheimer in Drama.
Margot Robbie lost the Best Actress Award to Emma Stone for Poor Things. Oppenheimer won in the two categories where the two films directly competed. Nolan beat Gerwig to the Best Director award and Downey Jr. beat Gosling to Best Supporting Actor.
