Since Call of Duty doesn’t seem to be working well for Activision Blizzard these days, Overwatch 2 has been stepping up as the company’s primary first-person shooter game for some time. The free-to-play title consistently comes up with fresh ways to keep its player base entertained, and it has started to become tradition for it to announce something extraordinarily major in February.

Last year, it welcomed anime fans with open arms by announcing a One Punch Man collaboration, and this year, it is none other than a show that is considered to be an all-time classic.

Overwatch 2 is collaborating with Cowboy Bebop in its upcoming Season 9.

The official YouTube channel of the game posted a brand new trailer for the upcoming Season 9, showcasing plenty of content that will be a part of the Champions chapter in Overwatch 2. To make things even more interesting, just as one would think that the trailer has ended, Blizzard teased yet another anime collaboration for the free-to-play shooter.

The scene shows Cole Cassidy, one of Overwatch‘s many heroes, as he is fittingly standing in a western terrain that looks perfect for the outlaw gunslinger.

Overwatch 2 fans will instantly recognize a familiar map from the game called Route 66, but it is what follows that is the highlight of the trailer. The trailer then has a shot of an old jukebox inside a building, and probably Cassidy himself puts a coin in to listen to some tunes. That is when the main opening theme of Cowboy Bebop starts playing, and nostalgia kicks in, hitting all the right notes.

Using the Opening Theme as a Tease Was Absolutely Genius

The one thing that undoubtedly stands out about the anime is the excellent music that was perfectly incorporated into the show. Since it was easily one of the most memorable aspects of the series, using it to tease the upcoming collaboration was a genius move on Blizzard’s part since it did not even have to put in too much effort to get fans excited.

All it took was a few nostalgic musical notes that anime fans are clearly familiar with, and Season 9: Champions already seems amazing.

Blizzard’s title collaborating with the anime could mean that the iconic outfits of characters like Spike, Faye, and Jet will be introduced as skins for the heroes in the game. Activision Blizzard has not exactly explained much else about the upcoming collaboration, but all will be made clear in around a week when Season 9: Champions launches on February 13.

Nonetheless, fans seem to be loving the crossover, with one calling it “absolutely insane” and another stating that hearing the opening theme again has made their day.

Overwatch 2 Season 9 will also bring a new event mode called Cosmic Crisis.
