The developers found the inspiration they needed from Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima and revealed how it influenced the team to take on the open-world structure while staying true to the core of the Soulslike genre.

Game director and producer, Fumihiko Yasuda, revealed in an interview that he was captivated by what Sucker Punch Productions was able to achieve with Ghost of Tsushima. Yasuda claimed that the PlayStation title gave his team the encouragement they needed to build a game that represents the Soulslike genre and gives players full freedom.

Rise of the Ronin is our first open world game, and Ghost of Tsushima was one of the games we used as reference, and I personally enjoyed it.

Yasuda also explained that the game was often used as a source of inspiration throughout the production of Team Ninja’s ambitious tale. The developers found ways to stand out by incorporating historical discoveries like blueprints for a glider, during a time when it seemed impossible.

Instead of competing with a game that shares many similar concepts, Team Ninja remained true to the formula used in previous projects like Nioh, undeterred by accusations it was creating a mere clone of a successful game. PlayStation even spoiled a secret boss that would have been a great surprise for long-time fans.

The Soulslike genre has been renowned for its intense combat and the sense of exploration and discovery. Team Ninja has put out a fair share of impressive games and even went above and beyond with this title by including some time-saving features.

Addressing one of the darkest periods in Japanese history through a video game is a formidable task, yet Team Ninja has risen to the occasion, surpassing fan expectations. Players have full agency to take on any job and affiliate themselves with any faction they see fit, which is a testament to the developer’s vision.

PlayStation’s gamble was not in collaborating with Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja, but in developing a new game, Rise of the Ronin, which bears a strong resemblance to the successful Ghost of Tsushima franchise. This risk paid off significantly as it attracted a broader audience, and Rise of the Ronin introduced features and ideas that were considerably more polished.
