Hopefully, the upcoming title is just the start of a much larger library of classic PS2-era games.

For many years, PlayStation console users have been begging the company to add emulators for older consoles as, from the PS4 onward, there’s not been any backward compatibility for the PS1, PS2, or PS3.

It seems the company has finally heard players’ cries, as some subtle hints show that PS2 emulation might finally be available on the official PS store.

Take a look at this description for a PS store listing uploaded by PS Deals, for Star Wars: The Clone Wars:

This title has been converted from the PlayStation®2 version to the PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®5 consoles and provides newly added features. Consequently, there may be times where the title plays differently from the PlayStation®2 version, or where some features may cause the title to not function properly. This version does not support the PlayStation®2 console’s peripherals, therefore some functionality may not be available.

If this is right, then other PS2 games might be coming soon to the PS store. Assumedly, Clone Wars and these other games will be part of the PS Plus Classics catalog, where other retro games are available for play.

The game’s description mentions there’ll be four different multiplayer modes: team-based strategy, deathmatch, king-of-the-hill, and cooperative endurance. It’ll be available as offline multiplayer for up to two players.

According to the listing, the game is set to release on June 11, 2024, less than a month away! Hopefully, this marks the first entry point into a ton more PS2 games being released on the PS store for PS5 owners to play.

Around the beginning of March this year, Time Extension released an interview they conducted with Implicit Conversions, a company that specializes in emulation software.

There was a statement from the interview that referred to the company porting PS2 games for the PS5, but it was promptly removed.

However, take a look at Implicit’s official LinkedIn:

Currently, we are working with clients to bring NES, PS1, PSP, and PS2 games to the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. Some of our partners and publishers include Disney Interactive, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Konami, Capcom, Team17, and Bend Studio.

Earlier, it only mentioned that they were working to bring PS2 games to the PS4 and PS5.

It’s all but confirmed by PlayStation; hopefully, the rumored May showcase (that still doesn’t have a confirmed date) will let us in on their PS2 emulation plans.
