It looks like Meta Platforms will be the winner in the race to develop the metaverse because it seems like no one will be there to compete. PlayStation VR2, a major player in the virtual reality (VR) market, might be counting on its final days if the rumors are anything to go by.

PSVR2 took almost six years to craft to perfection; at least that’s what VR enthusiasts might think. That would make many disappointed, if not sad. The gadget brought in games like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Gran Turismo 7, No Man’s Sky, and more on the platform to give players a more immersive experience.

Many have claimed that the metaverse, a concept that doesn’t have a definition to this date, is already dead. Maybe that’s why industry giants are seemingly keeping the evil at bay by turning their backs on the technology that is usually considered the pillar.

In a recent report put forward by the news website Android Central, Sony is said to be cutting funds for its PlayStation VR2. The source that talked with them said that VR games may have a few opportunities at Sony going forward. Moreover, there are reportedly a couple of VR games in development in the company.

The gaming industry is sailing through some troubled waters now, with companies like Sony, Microsoft, Embracer Group, and more being central to the news. It wasn’t long ago that the company let go of 900 of its PlayStation employees. And it has certainly affected the game’s development at large.

With that said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to people if these market conditions are prompting Sony to take such a decision.

Virtual Reality Might Not Have Gone Dead Just Yet

Just last month, the company announced that they will be integrating PSVR2 with PC gaming. This would allow the players to tap into new games that weren’t available up until now. It almost appeared like the company was trying to make it more engaging for the players.

Nonetheless, now it too appears like an experiment and now they don’t appear to have been showcasing interest in it. Available data shows that 2 million units of the headset were shipped and over 600K were sold. Earlier in March, Bloomberg reported on the halted production of the gadget. It was said that unsold units were piling up in there as Sony waited for the backlog to be cleared.

While VR is touted as the future of entertainment, the technology is losing its momentum. However, that doesn’t mean it’s dead, and potentially new breakthroughs may help get it through this declining phase.
