The fan favorite David Fincher‘s series Mindhunter is an adaptation of the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Serial Elite Crime. Written by former FBI agents, John E Douglas and Mark Olsgaker, the true-crime book details the life, story, crimes, and mental state of numerous serial killers in the country.

Among the most horrifying and bone-chilling criminals it lists, Edmund Kemper’s name comes at the top. Portrayed by Cameron Britton in the Netflix series, Kemper has committed gruesome murders of over 10 people including his grandparents and mother.

Standing at 6 foot 9 inches tall, he was also called the co-ed killer. During his imprisonment, he began collaborating with the Volunteers of Vacaville, a program that included narrating books for the visually impaired. Over the ten years of his participation with the program, Kemper recorded hundreds of books over the 5,000 or so hours he dedicated.

While the books he recorded were spread across varied genres, Edmund Kemper also voiced books like Dune Book 4: Emperor of Dune as well as George Lucas‘s popular science fiction novel Star Wars (via X). Thus, creating a bizarre unusual connection between David Fincher’s iconic series with Dune and Star Wars.

Reason Why David Fincher’s Mindhunter Is Done

Despite being an extremely well-made and fan-favorite series, Netflix’s Mindhunter was shelved after Season 2, even though it ended on a cliffhanger. While it was said that David Fincher was busy with his other works, the actors were all freed from their contracts by the studio in 2020 (via TVLine).

Physically and mentally exhausted by the show, David Fincher later in an interview with Vulture revealed the series was too expensive for them while the viewership was way too low.

“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

While the door for Mindhunter season 3 is long closed, fans still have hope that sometime in the future the show might take flight again.
