Starring and creating the 2021 American sitcom, Quinta Brunson portrayed the role of Janinie Teagues in Abbott Elementary. The story follows the dedicated lives of primary school teachers and a tone-deaf principal in a public school in Philadelphia as they make their students successful.

In the series, Ayo Edebiri portrays the role of Ayesha Teagues, the distant cousin to the lead character Janinie Teagues. On the other hand, Edibiri is also known for portraying the role of chef Sydney Adamu in the 2022 hit series The Bear. Well, with Edebiri and Brunson both winning an Emmy in 2024, this marks the first time that two Black women have won the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the Emmys!

Quinta Brunson won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Abbott Elementary while her on-screen sister Ayo Edebiri won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for The Bear and people are proud of the feat!

As per a report, Quinta Brinson became the first Black woman in more than 30 years to win an Emmy in the category of comedy. The actress revealed that she loved making Abbott Elementary and that she was just happy to be a part of the genre of comedy!

Back in 1981, Isabel Sanford won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Role for The Jeffersons. And for 30 years, no Black woman has won an Emmy in this category. Quinta Brunson decided to change that after winning the 2024 Emmy. As per the NY Times, Brunson revealed that she loved creating Abbott Elementary.

“I love making ‘Abbott Elementary’ so much and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy. I say it every time, but I just love comedy so much that I am so happy to be able to get this.”

With a high rating of 8.2/10 on IMDB and a whopping 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, Abbott Elementary has been deemed as one of the best sitcoms created. Having 2 seasons to its name and a third one in the works, the 2021 sitcom is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
