Sony is not particularly pleased with how Rise of the Ronin performed in terms of sales. This title had a good reception from critics, but players were not so interested. Team Ninja’s exclusive PlayStation game offers an open-world experience set in feudal Japan, which is undergoing a profound cultural transformation.

In a recent interview, the producers of the title discussed their approach to this genre and how this experience will be useful for future projects. There is a lot of room for improvement. The producer, Yosuke Hayashi, discussed the game’s conception nearly eight years ago.

Rise of the Ronin was a big challenge for us because it’s something we hadn’t done up until now in terms of the level of freedom and the story while retaining the action gameplay.

He also said that they were playing Red Dead Redemption when they thought of this game. He also talked about how the studio will improve with the current experience for future projects, referring to how some mechanics were not so smooth.

Hayashi added, “I think going forward, our challenge is to build from that and perhaps achieve things we weren’t able to do this time and continue to build from there.” Team Ninja knows that an open world is not what the studio would have wanted for this game. Nioh‘s creators are already working on a new game for the future.

Rise of the Ronin received “generally favorable” reviews, but fans were not very excited about this title. Team Ninja now wants to do better with its next titles from the learnings in Rise of the Ronin.

Sony Was Not Expecting This Kind of Sales for Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin is not the success that Sony wanted.
Rise of the Ronin is not the success that Sony wanted.

As with every recent game with a large budget, the development times are too long, and the ideas that seem fantastic in one particular moment don’t work years later. The industry is always confronting these difficulties, trying to improve and make a game that is relevant no matter what.

However, the window for the player’s attention is very small. Gamers are very special about how they spend their time. Sony is not launching any major AAA budget games this year; the company confirmed this a couple of months ago.

Rise of the Ronin is one of the exclusive games that fans will get this year. The latest Team Ninja title has underperformed due to slow sales, as per reports; this is not a good sign for one of the few exclusive IPs that will be available in 2024.

I'm a big fan of movies and videogames in general. I really love Pokémon and Godzilla. One of my favorite games is The Last of Us, Part II. A compelling and well-written story is always welcome.
