Interestingly, Perry is the first boss that players will face in Rise of the Ronin. However, that does not mean that players take him lightly. His barrage of attacks can make him one of the toughest enemies. He carries the standard issue for officers of the United States Navy with him being a Commodore.

One thing that distinguishes his weapon from others is the gold-plated brass on its hilt, guard, and scabbard. It is a sword that showcases exquisite craftsmanship.

How to defeat Matthew Perry in Rise of the Ronin?

The fight with Matthew Perry in Rise of the Ronin starts the moment the players deal with the guards and climb up the ladder located within his chambers. On seeing the player, a visibly startled Matthew Perry is confronted by the two protagonists from The Veiled Edge. And the battle begins.

Although this battle, being the first one, is pretty straightforward, players may need to keep the following things in mind before going heads-on with Commodore Matthew Perry:

  • Before heading to battle, players must make sure to seize both Perry’s Report and a Rifle along the way. Players may want to unlock a Sabre from the chest within the quarters equipping it ahead of the battle.
  • Perry begins his assault simultaneously on both party members. Besides he is extremely agile and precise and makes use of multiple combos with his attacks.
  • Players are advised to parry every attack by pressing the Triangle button in combat at the perfect time. This can be repeated multiple times to achieve multi-hit attacks.
  • Once staggered, players must begin their offensive by releasing a barrage of swift strikes at Perry. Players may also perform special finishers by pressing the Triangle button on the PS5 controller when close to Perry.

  • Players must remember that Perry can use heavy attacks, that are shown by a red aura. These heavy attacks should be either dodged or parried in order to avoid taking massive damage.
  • Additionally, Matthew Perry in Rise of the Ronin also uses firearms from a distance. Players must block or parry these shots to avoid being hit.
  • Generally, players are advised to avoid using firearms when battling Perry, since they can be slow and thus easily dodged by the enemy.
  • Players may also use the environment to their advantage. Using the R2 button to hook and pummel a set of explosive barrels players can light him on fire and stagger him for the moment.

Apart from these players must remember to use Medicinal items to heal. Besides if the battle with Perry turns out to be too cumbersome, players may try lowering the difficulty through the in-game settings.
