The awards season created a unique bond among Best Actress nominees Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone, but Stone’s win over Gladstone did not sit well with many fans. Stone won her second Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. Lily Gladstone, who played the Osage woman, Molly Burkhart, in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was expected by many to win the Oscar.
Lily Gladstone’s Oscar snub is also a loss to the Native American community, as she would have been the first Native woman to win the award. However, the competition was tight between Stone and Gladstone as they both won several other awards, beating each other, throughout this awards season.
Emma Stone’s Best Actress Win Over Lily Gladstone Upsets Fans
One of the upsets of the Oscar night at The Dolby Theater was Martin Scorsese‘s Killers of the Flower Moon failing to nab any awards. The best shot for the film at the major award categories was Lily Gladstone for Best Actress. However, Poor Things actress Emma Stone won the Best Actress. It was Stone’s second win after taking home the Oscar in 2017 for La La Land. Stone was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the films, Birdman and The Favourite.
Stone addressed her friend Gladstone in her acceptance speech, sharing that she was “in awe of you.” Gladstone arrived at the glamorous night of the year wearing a custom Gucci gown which was made in collaboration with Joe Big Mountain of Ironhouse Quillwork to honor her roots. Gladstone was a favorite among many fans after her win at the Golden Globes and recently at the SAG Awards.
Fans on X deemed this loss as a robbery. One fan was not happy that The Amazing Spider-Man actress won over both Lily Gladstone and Sandra Hüller. Fans hailed the Certain Women actress calling her the “People’s Oscar winner”. One fan also went on to highlight the emotional range Gladstone communicated through her eyes in Killers of the Flower Moon.

It’s incredible the emotional range Lily Gladstone was able to communicate with just her eyes. She didn’t win an Oscar but her work in Killers of the Flower Moon is one for the history books pic.twitter.com/L0hYhKEsyF

The Reservation Dogs actress seems to harbor no bad blood towards Emma Stone. Stone, Gladstone, and Annette Bening, nominated for NYAD, were seen embracing each other before the start of the ceremony (via People). Gladstone also mentioned her friendship with Stone in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Emma Stone Thanked Her Family And Daughter In Her Acceptance Speech
Emma Stone was clearly overwhelmed as she took the stage to accept her award. She couldn’t find the right words initially as she spoke about her torn dress and other nominees. She then thanked the Poor Things team and director Yorgos Lanthimos for giving this opportunity to her. She shared that the film was a result of a group of people coming together and pouring in “their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film.”

She then thanked her whole family, her mom and dad, brother Spencer, and husband Dave McCary. She revealed that her daughter would turn three in three days and thanked her for turning around their lives. She shared, “I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl. Thank you so much.” Other nominees in the category included Annette Bening for NYAD, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall.
