The National Research Group set out to address this issue with new research that surveyed moviegoers on which actors they would pay to see in a theatre. The results are in, and fans may be unhappy about where Robert Downey Jr stands.
Tom Cruise and Dwayne Johnson Top the List
According to the survey, Tom Cruise and Dwayne Johnson were the actors that would make fans want to watch a movie in a theatre. This should come as no surprise, seeing as how both stars have proven to be huge draws to theatres with their high-octane action flicks.

Cruise, in particular, has been a successful actor for quite some time, with films like Top Gun, Mission: Impossible, and Jerry Maguire to his name. On the other hand, Johnson has become one of Hollywood’s most reliable performers recently because he participated in blockbuster series like Fast and Furious and Jumanji.
Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, and Leonardo DiCaprio are among the top 20 actors listed in the study, with an average age of 58. Even while these performers are still very popular, the research reveals that their fame alone may not be enough to attract new viewers. Instead, it seems the greatest attractions are charismatic action stars like Cruise and Johnson, who can turn out hit after hit.
Robert Downey Jr Does Not Make The List
Surprisingly, Robert Downey Jr isn’t included among the actors who can preserve cinemas. He was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood for years but was still left out after being the MCU’s public face for nearly a decade. Given the huge popularity of the MCU and the fact that Robert Downey Jr plays one of the most adored characters, Iron Man, this is a surprise.
Robert Downey Jr may be omitted since his fame is closely associated with the MCU. Outside of the MCU, he hasn’t had major box-office successes in recent years. Though he’s had some successes like Sherlock Holmes and The Judge, he hasn’t been a constant hitmaker like Cruise or Johnson.
It’s also possible that Robert Downey Jr’s fame has faded in recent years. The actor had a checkered history as a Hollywood bad boy, but he’s straightened up and is now a respected community member. Some of his die-hard supporters, who preferred him in riskier parts, could have been put off by this.
Maybe Hollywood should stop depending so heavily on the popularity of a few actors and actresses and put more effort into developing storylines and characters that can succeed on their own. This would assist in fostering new stars who are recognized for their acting skills rather than merely their name on the poster, leading to a wider variety of films being made.
