In a podcast with GLHF’s Game & Fortune, Red Dead Redemption 2’s Roger Clark told audiences about Rockstar Games’ extremely strict NDA policies. Based on his work and connections in the industry, he talked about how they’re even tougher than Marvel’s.
It’s not outside the box to hear about Rockstar Games’ secretive nature. But when compared to giants like Marvel, it raises the question of the size and secrecy of ongoing projects too (such as GTA 6). Moreover, this isn’t the first time a voice actor has quite openly voiced their thoughts on Rockstar’s strict policies.
Rockstar Games’ Strict NDAs May Be a Reason Why We Haven’t Heard About GTA 6
The silence around the next Grand Theft Auto has fans speculating and conversing about all the reasons that the game’s details aren’t revealed by anyone (not a single employee) at Rockstar Games. When we take a deeper look at how NDAs are in place at the studio, it starts making sense why there’s not a single word about GTA 6 or anything related to the franchise in all these years of development.
In a podcast at GLHF’s Game & Fortune, Roger Clark made a remark regarding how strict NDAs are at Rockstar Games:
Ben is friends with Chris Pratt. They are buddies, and have been for decades. Well, apparently when everything was done and dusted and Red Dead 2 was out, Ben compared NDAs with Chris Pratt and Rockstar’s NDA was more strict than Marvel’s.
This comes as a surprise since Marvel is known for being one of the more secretive companies that stays hush-hush about upcoming projects. While this may seem a bit absurd (and even irritating) to fans, it serves as a better surprise in the larger context of things. Overall, it maintains brand value and ethics surrounding source materials, the works of various actors, and so on. It is a similar philosophy that is followed by Rockstar Games.
In the last several years, Rockstar Games has maintained a reputation for keeping secrets and sharing only selective information and ‘teases’ that are shared on social media through subtle ways instead of bright marketing gimmicks. So much so that fans aren’t able to guess voice actors and story-related content unless leakers get too creative and arrogant about it.
Voice Actors Are Often the ‘Face’ of Video Game Studios
Roger Clark is known for his exceptional work in Red Dead Redemption 2. His portrayal of Arthur Morgan is a performance that will stay in the hearts of endless people, no matter when they experience the game. In the podcast, he explained why he believes the NDAs are stricter with Rockstar Games. It’s because of his connection with Benjamin Byron Davis, a co-star who is friends with Chris Pratt (our very own Star-Lord from the MCU).
In the past, Ned Luke (who plays Michael in GTA 5) was exposed to a story about how someone he knew told him on social media that they spotted Luke in the first trailer of the game. Ned quickly made adjustments in order to delete that information, at the risk of further information being channeled out.
In an interview, Ned explained how he couldn’t even tell his family and close ones about his work, regardless of how much work was done with the game and how soon GTA 5 was arriving.
While there’s no actual news about the voice actors of the upcoming GTA 6, a popular internet celebrity, Bryan Zampella, is often presumed to be the voice for Jason (the possible protagonist) for the game. However, given the strict NDA terms and legal actions that can be taken against actors upon breaking them, it’s highly unlikely that Bryan is truly the face of GTA’s next iconic protagonist. Unless, of course, this was what Rockstar Games was planning all along.
