In the film industry, what the audience sees is what the film sells them as reality, which is the job of the actors to ensure every moment is believable and genuine. To achieve such a feat, many stars go the extra mile in preparing themselves for their roles how they see fit. In the case of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams though, it turned out to be on a completely different level.
With their critically acclaimed romance drama film Blue Valentine, we saw the stars bring some of the most impactful performances of their careers to the big screen. But doing so required them to take the initiative and make that vision come true, which is the reason why they decided to stay together for a month to prepare.
Michelle Williams And Ryan Gosling Decided To Live Together To Prepare For Blue Valentine
The general public may hear stories of how movie stars pulled no punches and went to extreme lengths to prepare for their roles in their films, but seldom a one like this. When it came to stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams preparing for their then-upcoming film Blue Valentine, they were serious about giving the audience a performance of a lifetime.
But since it was a romance drama film with a lot of dynamics related to romantic and parental relationships, they found themselves in a bind at first.

Therefore, to make sure they left no stones unturned, both the stars decided that it would serve them best to get a first-hand experience of what it means to be a couple and a family with each other. This led to them making an arrangement to live together for an entire month after a nudge from director Derek Cianfrance to get to know each other as individuals and together as a couple.
But they weren’t the only ones who were ready to take it up a notch. Faith Wladyka, the actress who played their daughter in the film also stayed with them for that month to ignite that familial feeling. Not only this, but to maintain the realism of the film, most of the shots that were taken were through the lens of a handheld camera and not a giant cinematic one.
The efforts of the cast and crew paid off in the end as the audience was genuinely impressed with what they had managed to achieve with the film, so much so that both the lead stars received Golden Globe nominations for their performances.

What Was Blue Valentine About?
Navigating the paths of relationships and life as individuals in those bonds can be tricky, and Hollywood often doesn’t depict the reality of those through the lens of a camera. This was the reason why 2010’s Blue Valentine was such a fresh and impactful tale because the realism of those dynamics could be felt by everyone.
The film tells the tale of Dean and Cindy, a couple who from afar, looks like the typical happy and fulfilled family to most, but deep down, there are things that are better left unseen. The film tells the story of their past of how they were once something that had everything going for them, but later, those were replaced by irreversible cracks in their relationship.
