Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool films were a huge success among fans mainly due to the actor’s major involvement in the creative elements of the script. When the character and the third film in the franchise were included in the MCU, Kevin Feige completely trusted Reynolds with the film. This also meant that Reynolds’ cheeky dialogues would not get an axe from the studio. The Green Lantern actor has reportedly not shown any mercy to Feige himself.
The only thing in Deadpool & Wolverine that Reynolds took some time to convince Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios was the involvement of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Once Jackman too showed interest in returning, Feige decided to greenlit the whole Deadpool vs Wolverine idea.
Ryan Reynolds Will Take Cheeky Digs At Kevin Feige And Marvel Studios In Deadpool 3
Kevin Feige‘s MCU is about to witness its first R-rated hero, Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. The film has already received a tremendous response from fans after the release of its teaser trailer. It is expected to revive the Marvel Studios from its current declining trend, marked by the box office disappointments of The Marvels and Ant-Man 3.
When Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired to write the screenplay in 2022, they were excited to mine the MCU for more Deadpool jokes. In an interview with Den of Greek, they revealed that both Disney and Marvel were supportive of the jokes about the MCU, mainly because of the success of the previous films.
Deadpool actor Karan Soni, who played cab driver Dopinder in the previous films, appeared at the SXSW Festival recently and teased that some of these jokes were directed at Feige. Speaking to Collider, Soni shared that Ryan Reynolds is calling out the Marvel Studios head quite a few times in the movie. He also added that Feige has a good sense of humor and was cool with all the jokes made about him in the film. Soni told Collider:
“[Kevin Feige] came up and said hi to all of us from the original movies and stuff, and he seemed excited himself by what was happening. And then Ryan is definitely like, you know, calling him out a lot at the moment. There’s a lot of Kevin jokes [in the movie]. You have to have a good sense of humor and he does. So that’s cool.”
Although the fourth-wall-breaking style of Deadpool 3 was a clear departure from the other MCU films, Feige was all game for it. The Marvel boss was thrilled to integrate Deadpool with all its essence into the MCU and make the maximum use of the IP and the resources that came along with it. He clearly has no problem with Ryan Reynolds claiming to be ‘Marvel Jesus’.
Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool In The MCU Is A Great Thing For Both Parties
According to Karan Soni, Deadpool & Wolverine happening in the MCU was a good thing for both parties. Soni can assure fans that the film is going to be really good since Ryan Reynolds is taking full advantage of the MCU. Reynolds is also shaking things up at the Marvel Studios, which they needed badly.
Soni believed that combining the powers of Reynolds, who’s a genius, and Feige, who changed the industry, is going to deliver a pretty exciting output. Soni shared:
“Ryan’s taking full advantage of the MCU and playing with all the toys. It also feels like it’s coming at a perfect time for the MCU because it’s ready for a little bit of a shake-up, and he’s definitely shaking it up. And so I think like, this is great that it’s coming at this time, and they’re very willing to make fun of themselves, which is important. […] You know, him, Kevin’s obviously completely changed the industry, and then Ryan who’s such a genius, like them combining their power, it’s pretty exciting.”
At the Comic-Con in 2022, Feige shared that it was fun to be working with Reynolds on the film (via The Hollywood Reporter). Reynolds is also set to become the first MCU hero to write, produce, and star in one of the movies. Reynolds’ Maximum Effort is producing the film along with director Shawn Levy‘s 21 Laps Entertainment.
Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled to be released on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
