In 2016, Seth Rogen and his team delivered a hilarious adult animated comedy, Sausage Party. The raunchy, over-the-top film became the highest-grossing R-rated animated movie of all time, grossing $141 million on a $19 million budget. The outlandish characters return in the upcoming eight-episode series on Prime Video, Sausage Party: Foodtopia. The series sees Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Micahel Cera, and Edward Norton reprise their roles from the film.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia follows the events from Sausage Party, where Frank and his friends establish a safe haven called “Foodtopia.” But after a massive flood that destroys their land, they have no choice but to partner with humans to ensure survival for all of them.

The Critique

We dive head first into the events that followed the film, where Frank gathered the crew to escape the Shopwell grocery store and attempted to form the Foodtopia. Things quickly got out of hand, leading to them potentially facing a greater threat to their livelihood. It was wise of the writers to follow so closely to the film’s aftermath because it provided the context needed to give you a vague recollection of what transpired without going back to watch it.

While animated comedies often follow a non-linear story, Foodtopia is the opposite and for the better. Each episode is a crisp 24-25 minutes, but within that episode, you are building on the prior, making you fully invested in the story. It also allows you to make this the easiest binge of the summer. I started the series and continued watching until I got to the finale in one sitting.

While raunchy humor seems to be rare today, the creators and writers of Sausage Party knew that what made the film so successful was its no-holds-barred comedy. As a result, everything that made the film work with its outlandish and perverted humor returned, and the show was for the better because of it. With the blended mix of hilarious one-liners and sexual innuendos, you will be laughing non-stop for eight episodes.

Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig make the perfect duo in any project they work on together. Frank and Brenda make such a fun couple to root for on this mission to save their fellow food people, and the chemistry between Rogen and Wigg is unmatched. That said, we saw Edward Norton somewhat steal the show as Sammy Bagel Jr. in the movie, and he does so again within Sausage Party: Foodtopia. He has several scene-stealing sequences that make you laugh out loud or jam, along with a hilarious musical sequence in episode 3. It’s a playful and fun side of Norton you don’t see.

As the president of the Fast & Furious fan club, having an entire episode dedicated to replicating the final heist in Fast Five, this series got an extra point for that alone. Not only was it executed brilliantly, but the sheer comedy of it all made it that much better.

Conclusion

Whatever your expectations for Sausage Party: Foodtopia will determine whether you enjoy the series. If you are a fan of the movie (like me), you will be binging through all eight episodes in one sitting. It’s a crisply written script that delivers all the raunchy laughs you can ever ask for. And to think Jerry Seinfeld said this type of comedy was dead. I live for this type of comedy within a series, movie, or stand-up. Jump head first into Footopia, and thank you me later.
