Saw 11 has been announced by Lionsgate, which means that the longest horror movie franchise to ever exist has just gotten longer. Ever since the tenth film in the franchise opened to some great reviews and was deemed by some to be the best-made Saw film ever, the anticipation around Saw 11 has been high. Saw 10 was made as a direct sequel to the 2004 original and a prequel to the second part. The film starred Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith in lead roles and was directed by Kevin Greutert.

Lionsgate posted a rather cryptic yet obvious post on Instagram revealing the announcement of Saw 11. Although it was almost obvious that another part was on the way considering the massive success of the previous part, the fact that it came so soon is a pleasant surprise to fans of the franchise and horror movie enthusiasts. Audiences have already begun decoding the post and figuring out what this part might be all about.

The post was also captioned with the date “9.27.24,” indicating the probable release date for the movie to be September 27, 2024. This suggests that the production for the film has already been planned out and the studio is prepared with the story for Saw 11.

Will Saw 11 be another sequel to the first part?

The very first Saw film was released in 2004 and changed the definition of the horror genre forever. It went on to become one of the most popular horror movies while also influencing the horror movies and shows that followed. Saw was James Wan‘s directorial debut and took everyone by a shock because of how gritty and engaging it was.

Moreover, Wan revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted to “cut through the noise of all the indie films at the time,” and he did just that with Saw. It follows the Jigsaw Killer who traps victims and forces them to inflict physical hurt and pain upon themselves as a way to free themselves.

However, like most horror movies, the film didn’t receive a great critical response despite its box office success. Many reviews complained about the gore, an element that went on to create an entire sub-genre of its own. This critical resistance is what made Saw 10 so special and even indicated that the franchise might take a turn towards being something different because the tenth part received some truly good reviews, the best for any Saw film.

Considering the inconclusive note that Saw 10 ended on, it is likely that Saw 11 is a direct sequel to that part which means that it will serve as a prequel to Saw 2. The return of Mark Hoffman and Henry Kessler along with the Jigsaw killer was also teased towards the end, making their presence in the next part extremely likely.

The most intriguing question, however, is what kind of an approach the makers are going to adopt in the making of Saw 11 because Saw 10, despite all its critical acclaim, was not as commercially successful as the previous parts. Whether they will pick up a similar approach to make it a widely acknowledged series or the gore and horror will be amped up to ensure returns will be interesting to watch.
