What did David F. Sandberg Say about Shazam 2?

David F. Sandberg talked about Shazam 2 in the latest edition of Total Film Magazine, where the director stated that his upcoming film is similar to a “mini Avengers movie.”  He also stated the problems with shooting with so many characters in a scene and how difficult it was to place the characters in a scene.

[Shazam! Fury of the Gods is] like a mini-Avengers movie. That’s how I saw it because there are so many characters. You have all these heroes, you have the villains, you have the monsters… It’s a lot of movie packed into its runtime. And it’s complicated. Just shooting and staging up to 11 characters in a scene… Where do you put everyone? It’s really hard!”

The director, however, clarified that, unlike MCU’s Avengers, Shazam 2 would be different because it will be Shazam’s movie and how Billy is afraid to lose his family but it’ll also focus on the Marvel Family and their superhero adventures around Philadelphia.

“The story is very much about Billy being afraid of losing this family… He found a family in the first movie, and now they’re getting old enough to have to move out of a group home and start getting jobs. So he’s terrified. They have to balance their regular lives of going to school and having jobs with being superheroes. It’s tough for them.”

“[Shazam! Fury of the Gods is] still Shazam’s movie, but it’s also about the family. They’ve all been superheroes for a while now, trying to stop crime and save people. But they’re not very good at it. The city has dubbed them the Philly Fiascos.”

Sandberg also talked about how the sequel is bigger than the first film in terms of the budget, and how he worked to make the first film connect with the audience, and due to the low budget, they could not compete with other superhero films.

“On the first one we had a lower budget and it was a smaller movie. It felt like, ‘We can’t really compete with the other superhero movies for action and scale, so we have to focus on character and humor – what makes it different.’ On this one we got more resources so we could actually compete with the other superhero movies.”

With the insights provided by David F. Sandberg Shazam 2 sounds exciting, which will be full of action while occasionally making its audience laugh and possibly moving them into tears.
