David Ayer has been in a long battle with DC and Warner Brothers over the release of the director’s cut of his DC movie Suicide Squad. Ayer directed the 2016 movie under Snyderverse. However, the studio has refused to release his cut. Over the years, the director has teased several never-before-seen footage, and fans expected a director’s cut following the release of these videos.

However, Ayer revealed that he’s done fighting, or to be specific, he is done with DC. Responding to one concerned Suicide Squad fan, the director painted a picture of Hollywood.

“No one is autonomous in Hollywood. A large film will be presented to a green light committee and the CEO and the corporate board. There are many presentations and sign off,” Ayer wrote on X.

The director will not be DC-bound, not anytime soon anyway, “I’m done with DC,” he revealed in another post on X. Adding further, the director wrote, “Nothing about the situation feels good. Studio has no interest in releasing it. It’s time to run and not look back.” Ayer has taken some time to clarify the doubts among fans, and now they are clear that he is hanging the DC boots.

There is no point in waiting and expecting a director’s cut for Suicide Squad, Ayer fought and lost the battle and is now urging fans to move on. Nope. Done and done. Very sad. You’ll be fine after a good cry. I feel healthier. It’s a wound that needs to heal,” he wrote on X.

But what’s next for the director? Ayer-directed Jason Statham starrer action flick The Beekeeper is all geared up to make the theatrical debut. But after the movie, Ayer seemed to be clear about his next directorial as he teased fans on X about potential future projects.

One fan made a subtle demand for a Submarine movie as they claimed that the director was due, and Ayer seemed to agree, “Im overdue there for sure,” he responded. Is that a hint for a Submarine movie? Perhaps the director would not shy away from such a project, but the director also teased moving into another genre.

Written and directed by Ayer, the 2014 war action drama Fury has a huge fan following. While appreciating the movie, one fan asked the director if he was up for another war movie, as most would agree, he is good at it. “I think you’re right. I will definitely make another war film,” Ayer wrote in response. It appears that Ayer is clear about what is next on the road for him, but certainly not any DC slate anymore.

The Beekeeper will hit the theaters on 12 January 2024.
