Spider-Man 2: Exciting New Things to Look Forward To

With the launch right around the corner, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has well-prepared us for a superhero landing that’s hopefully twice as fun both in content and gameplay quality.

The sequel to Insomniac’s widely successful game combines the narrative of Peter and Miles; New York’s friendly neighborhood superheroes. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s gameplay puts together both the Spider-Man’s powers and tricks as playable mechanics. From the story trailer, we get to meet Harry Osborn again. There’s certainly an eerie vibe here, with Venom’s presence throughout the narrative.

Switching between these two will result in varying maneuvering techniques and distinct combat styles. Overall, this makes for unique gameplay for each player.

The new combat mechanics evolve over time, especially how the gameplay shows off Miles’ and Peter’s individual powers. Miles makes use of bioelectric abilities, like the ‘Thunder Burst’ that discharges a lightning-esque power through multiple enemies. On the other hand, Peter has a new Black Symbiote Suite that brings in a new component to fighting that leads to furious parrying, a range of new combos, and can aggressively disrupt enemies.

Furthermore, Spider-Man 2 takes players to the nostalgic New York City where the previous two games (Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales) took place. Building on that, Insomniac has expanded the map into Brooklyn, Queens, and Coney Island. Previously, the games were limited to exploring Manhattan Island.

What to Expect from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Campaign

Despite having a robust open world to explore, Marvel’s Spider-Man games have usually had reasonably short-to-medium campaign lengths. Based on a statement by the Senior Game Director (Ryan Smith) at Insomniac:

Spider-Man 2 is in the same ballpark as the first game in terms of overall playtime.

Considering how the game promises to have 65 different costumes (for both, Miles and Peter), there is a lot to unlock and try out in the new game. Whether through main missions or side quests, players can unlock these and swap between different styles. This has the potential to show off 200 possible looks.

Based on what Insomniac has said about the campaign length, we can assume 17 hours of story missions. On top of that, completionists can expect to take 35 hours to unlock everything the game has to offer.

There’s a chance that players will take even longer since web-swinging through the expanded map and being distracted by possible side-quests and exploring secrets is very much going to be part of the core gameplay loop. It’s a much-welcomed design for anyone who enjoys open-world games, let alone one that’s built around playing as one of the more flexible and curious superheroes.

Along with Venom, we’ll be seeing a bunch of different anti-heroes in the game, including Kraven the Hunter, the Lizard, Grizzly, and Mr. Negative. Fans of the comics may be familiar with them. However, Insomniac is putting their own ‘twist’ to characters like Lizard, where some creative freedom has been put to use.

The creative team has been taking important information from the comics and nonchalantly fitting the characters into the game’s world. Mr. Negative, however, made a cameo in a recent trailer, and it seems that we may be meeting some familiar faces with darker motives this time around.
