In the vast string of Spider-Man films, the No Way Home trilogy left one lingering question: did it do the characters of Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy justice? Although the NWH trilogy was a cinematic treat, it faced criticism for moving away from realistic portrayals of beloved characters, especially Harry Osborne and Gwen Stacy.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man 4‘s rumored street adventure presents an interesting opportunity to correct the NWH trilogy’s mistake. By introducing comic-accurate versions of Harry Osborne and Gwen Stacy, the film could recapture the essence of classic Spider-Man stories and deliver the characters fans deserve.
No Way Home’s Missed Mark: Can Spider-Man 4 Keep Up with Classic Spidey?
Spider-Man: No Way Home gave us a fantastic multiverse, but for some fans, it had some faults. Though the film rejoiced with nostalgia, some beloved characters felt like missed opportunities, most notably Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy.
The No Way Home trilogy introduced Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy, but their portrayal was heavily deviated from their comic book counterparts. The films surely gave a new interpretation but failed to represent the attributes of these beloved characters.
However, Spider-Man 4 has the potential to correct such mistakes. If the story is grounded in Spider-Man’s personal struggles and relationships, the film could offer the intricacies of Peter Parker’s world. This shift in focus could pave the way for the introduction of the comic-accurate versions of Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy.
Also, with Peter Parker’s identity erased from everyone’s memory, Spider-Man 4 has the perfect chance to bring these characters with a clean perspective. And, that approach will allow Spider-Man 4 to delve into the darker side of Spider-Man‘s universe, reminiscent of the beloved Tobey Maguire-era films.
Drew Goddard May be Directing Spider-Man 4
At the moment Marvel Studios does not have a director for the Spider‘s fourth adventure, as Jon Watts, who directed the first three films, will not be returning for a fourth film.
However, Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman claims they are trying to get Drew Goddard to sign on for the film. Goddard was also rumored to be Kevin Feige’s favorite to direct Spider-Man if Watts ever decided to step away.
Goddard has earlier helmed films such as The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. Also, he has produced and written the script for the Daredevil franchise. It could indicate an entirely new take on Spider-Man if Goddard does step in to direct the franchise.
Currently, regarding Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4, several rumors are circulating. Goddard’s addition has the potential to introduce characters like Wilson Fisk and Jessica Jones into the web-slinger’s world.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is streaming on Hulu.
