The Spider-Man TV universe is growing in size. Oren Uziel, a big-screen writer who worked on the Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum action comedy The Lost City and Mortal Kombat 2021, is writing a Spider-Man Noir live-action series for Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

Spider-Man Noir comic books first appeared in 2009 as part of the Marvel Noir world. During the Great Depression, this version of the renowned superhero lived in New York. He gets bitten by a spider hiding within a stolen item, which causes him to see visions of a spider god who bestows superpowers upon him.

The character has previously featured onscreen in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, with Milo Ventimiglia giving it his voice, and in Into the Spider-Verse, with Nicolas Cage being the voice actor. The Amazon series will be Spider-Man Noir‘s first live-action adaptation.

Amazon will produce Spider-Man Noir, not Sony

Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse

Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the producers of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that first introduced the Spider-Man Noir persona to audiences, worked with Uziel to conceive the series and will executive produce it under their Lord Miller brand. Amy Pascal, who has worked on all of Sony’s Spider-Man adaptations will executive produce this one as well, alongside Uziel.

The news of the Noir series comes just a few weeks after Nicolas Cage, who voiced Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse, told Screen Rant that he hadn’t been invited to return for Across the Spider-Verse and wasn’t sure what the character’s future held.

Even if it weren’t an Amazon Studios production, the concept of a live-action, black-and-white Spider-Man program about someone who isn’t Peter Parker would seem odd, considering how fixated Marvel Studios and Sony have been on the original webhead.

Spider-Man Noir

In an interview with ScreenRant, Nicolas Cage was asked about his return as Spider-Man Noir, unfortunately, the actor has some disappointing news to share. He said,

“You’d have to ask Sony. I don’t know what’s going on with that. No one’s spoken to me about that. Ask them. I don’t know. I really don’t. I wish they would. I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that’s a great character. Spider-Man’s the coolest superhero. And then you combine that with Cagney and Bogart and Edward G. Robinson, come on, it’s a great character.”

Miles Morales as Spider-Man in Sony Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse centered mostly on Miles Morales’ quest to become Spider-Man while also introducing and touching on the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will travel even further into the Spider-Verse, and while several Spider-Men will be featured, it appears Spider-Man Noir will not be among them. Cage’s love of Spider-Man and classic noir detective culminated in a distinct and captivating figure who was crucial to Miles’ emergence as a hero.

Back in 2019, Lord and Miller said they were working on an interrelated series of Marvel Television shows that everyone assumed was Spider-Man-related. The announcement of Silk: Spider Society by Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, validated those thoughts a year later. Noir-live action might be the next step toward the said TV show.
