Well, whatever may be the case, it seems that the reality show is not worth the pain and the hassle as Squid Game: The Challenge did not receive great ratings. Although Netflix raked in millions from the show, its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk candidly revealed that Netflix did not give him a bonus.

Back before the 2021 series became a global phenomenon, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had already signed a contract with Netflix. After the series went on to earn millions, Dong-hyuk candidly revealed in an interview with The Guardian that he is “not that rich”.
“I’m not that rich. But I do have enough. I have enough to put food on the table. And it’s not like Netflix is paying me a bonus. Netflix paid me according to the original contract. I kept having new ideas and revising the episodes as we were filming so the amount of work multiplied.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk further continued,
“I was very financially straitened because my mother retired from the company she was working for. There was a film I was working on but we failed to get finance. So I couldn’t work for about a year. We had to take out loans — my mother, myself, and my grandmother.”
With the first episode recently released on 22 November, the next episode is set for a release date of 29 November. Squid Game: The Challenge has debuted with a rating of 4/10 on IMDB and a low of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is available to stream on Netflix.
