Star Wars is one of the most popular franchises of all time, anything attached to its name will surely bring a surge of curiosity, and given the success of The Mandalorian on Disney+ and their deal with EA and Respawn bearing new fruit with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wards Jedi: Survivor, perhaps success can be found by integrating the Mandalorian to a video game. Recently, EA pulled the plug on Respawn’s Mandalorian project and now details of the canceled game have surfaced.
Star Wars Nailed the Gaming Space with Respawn and EA
The game had a simple premise where the player takes on the role of a Mandalorian, not The Mandalorian Din Djarin from the show itself which could also mean the game would allow the players to customize their character.
While having a linear structure, the player will take on missions and bounties with a standard loadout and areas where they could upgrade their armor and more. The combat was described to be fast-paced courtesy of the jetpack and will have players fight enemies significant to the Star Wars lore.
Despite the cancellation, Respawn is aware of the demands of the fans given the success of the first two Jedi games and will work on a third Star Wars Jedi to complete the trilogy for Cal Kestis, as well as working on two Marvel projects: Marvel’s Iron Man and Marvel’s Black Panther. Perhaps EA saw the risk of adapting an already famous franchise in a different format, and Iron Man was a much more feasible idea to push through with.
The canceled project would have been a first-person shooter that also features close-quarters combat and a takedown feature similar to DOOM and Marvel’s Spider-Man. Enemy types will greatly vary depending on which planet the Mandalorian will visit which is a good sign that enemy variety has been taken into consideration to avoid common complaints by gamers of fighting the same enemy over and over again.
A Star Wars Mandalorian Project Could Have Been The Way
The franchise is headed toward the big screen with the recent announcement that the Mandalorian and Grogu will be titular heroes in their new adventure with Jon Favreau at the helm. Maybe Mando doesn’t need a game after if he is getting all this publicity, rather than use the hype, EA opted to take a different route and not compete with what Disney has in store.
Regardless, there is no denying that EA and Respawn could have had the same lightning strike twice had they pushed forward with another Star Wars game with a different gameplay focus. Having multiple projects compete for the attention of fans would have been bad for business, either way, fans are hoping for a proper FPS Star Wars game soon.
