The original trilogy introduced the Star Wars franchise to the world of pop culture that influenced everything that came after it, and the game developers seem to hope to use this hype and nostalgia for an interactive experience.

Ubisoft took on the challenge of creating an original story set within the Star Wars franchise. Julian Gerighty once mentioned that there will be no dull moment in Star Wars Outlaws and something will happen that will force the gaming community to make certain decisions under timed pressure. Players can either engage or flee from the scene.

In a recent interview, Gerighty shared how the team decided when this game would take place.

Almost on day one it was decided we were original trilogy,

Gerighty continued that this story would show a different side to the beloved trilogy that was never addressed in the films.

We were set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. And from then on, I don’t worry about anything else. It is telling a new story with familiar touch points. It’s a scoundrel story, so maybe you’re not going to meet people who don’t really belong in a scoundrel story. Leia might not make sense, but Qi’ra, Jabba the Hut, Lando… absolutely. You don’t want the galaxy to feel too small by just doing the greatest hits of all the Star Wars characters.

The protagonist will be an original character with nothing to do with the Skywalker Saga. Kay Vess will be a worm’s eye view of the galaxy.

Ubisoft is not using the original trilogy as a crutch but means to add more to the lore. Other spinoff projects, like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, had a similar experience by taking place between Episode 4 and filling in the gaps.

The developers wanted to preserve the feel and atmosphere of the original trilogy to pay homage while adding something new at the same time. Other mechanics from popular massive open-world franchises like GTA influenced the law enforcement of this game.

Other obscure characters, like Jabba the Hutt will be present in this original adventure. This game is an opportunity to provide more background and depth to the criminal underworld.

It is not easy to work on a project that may take place at a popular moment in the franchise but is in no way directly connected. Fans will look at this trilogy through a different pair of lenses.

Ubisoft shared gameplay footage and fans are cautiously optimistic to avoid disappointment. Hopefully, the gameplay will remain faithful to what was initially shared.
