Star Wars Outlaws is the latest game set in a galaxy far, far away and the setting is at the peak of the franchise’s best era. Ubisoft wanted to show a different point of view by creating a story that doesn’t necessarily revolve around the Galactic Civil War but centers on a simple scoundrel getting by.
The narrative director of the game took the time to share details regarding the main protagonist, Kay Vess, and how the team developed the story while honoring the previous stories.
Star Wars Outlaws Is About An Ordinary Person, Not A Rebel
Navid Khavari, the narrative director for the upcoming game, sat for an interview with GameInformer, where he shared that the idea for the game came from a fantasy he had always dreamed of.
Taking a step back from all the major factions in the Star Wars universe like the Rebellion, Jedi, the Sith, and the Empire, Khavari thought it would be fitting to take on the role of someone who does not have a part in the overarching saga. He said:
Game-wise, it began with the fantasy we wanted to deliver, that of a scoundrel. That opens up what you want to experience in the Star Wars galaxy, from having a blaster, riding a Speeder, piloting a ship, and stepping into cantinas filled with scum and villainy.
Khavari further added:
Then after pitching that to Lucasfilm Games and landing on this era within the original trilogy between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, we wanted to have the story grow from those fixed points as organically as possible. To respect and honor what came before but see where we can take the story somewhere new.
The writer also ensured that this game would organically branch off from existing stories to weave all the narrative threads of Star Wars and went above and beyond by collaborating with Lucasfilm Games to honor other games like EA and Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi games.
The game’s visuals did impress the fans and are ecstatic to see the growth and change of Ubisoft’s tech. It is important for a game to properly showcase the biomes and locations that are well known to immerse the players even more.
Ubisoft Will Expand The Universe Through Star Wars Outlaws
Khavari believed that there was a story that could be hidden at the height of the Galactic War. He felt it was up to him and his creative team to deliver another authentic Star Wars story but without the burden of focusing on the main saga.
From a game perspective, it is said to be the first true open-world game and early previews have shown that and then some that left fans cautiously optimistic for the final product.
Perhaps this game will be the perfect opportunity to expand the lore and give more obscure and original characters like Kay and her background as an ordinary person to take center stage for a change.
