While the world might be enamored by the endless list of options that streaming giant Netflix has to offer, a trait that made it the household name for content consumption, the show that put the service provider on the map was none other than Stranger Things, one of the biggest and most popular shows in the small screen entertainment space today.

The reason behind the seemingly absurd success of this Netflix original has to do with its loyal and dedicated fanbase that it has managed to create, which will forever immortalize this series in the history books. But along the way, this exact popularity is what makes it a prime target for wrongdoers to take advantage of the people who love the show, like a recent incident where a woman was scammed out of her money and suffered a broken marriage from a person that pretended to be the show’s star Dacre Montgomery.

In recent news, a case of catfishing was reported where a woman named McKala, who is a huge fan of Netflix’s original show Stranger Things, was scammed by a fraud that pretended to be Dacre Montgomery, popularly known as Billy Hargrove from the show. While putting up this false identity in front of their victim, this person managed to make the woman shell out almost $10,000 and send it to them in the span of a year.

She first met this fake star on an online forum about a year ago, where they started talking to each other, but never were face to face with each other in person. Since she was obsessed with the show, and also with the actor’s performance, she believed him after a while after she was suspicious at the start. Therefore, after some time talking online through texts, the scammer gave her an ultimatum that he wanted her to be his girlfriend and that she had to leave her husband to be with him. Since her marriage was already estranged a little before, she divorced her husband.

As for swindling money from her, the person said that since he (Montgomery) and his ex-girlfriend had joint accounts, she also had control over his assets, which made it hard for him to access them, therefore, he sought financial help from her. And just like that, he managed to rake in almost $10,000 from her, which was devastating for her since she is a single mother.

Apart from the extensive marketing and promotion tactics that the streaming giant utilized to spread the word about the show, Stranger Things was a show that brought in the older generation of the population into its consumer base through its retro premise and a sense of nostalgia from those good old days. Mixed with all that, the story was grounded in reality while also having the balance of the supernatural and fictional.
