Studio Gobo has been a helping hand behind Redfall, a title alongside Modern Warfare 3, regarding the biggest AAA disappointment of 2023. The studio has also been responsible for contributing to Hogwarts Legacy. Fans of the Wizarding World universe have chiefly appreciated the title despite receiving mediocre reviews as an RPG when viewed individually.
In the current scenario of AAA game development, notable titles like the Silent Hill 2 remake are being developed in Unreal Engine 5. Furthermore, titles like Tekken 8 demonstrate how the engine is being utilized to establish new and better gameplay standards. As per a rumor, Gobo could be working on a AAA game utilizing the cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5, which is slowly becoming the industry norm.
Rumor suggests that Studio Gobo is on to a new adventure using Unreal Engine 5
The rumor started on the popular video game forum ResetEra. The speculation began around the studio’s projects when one user on the forum pointed out the various job postings that were live for the studio.
The job opening being discussed was that of a Senior Environment Artist for the studio. Alongside the opening title, this was mentioned regarding the job description and the project:
The Senior Environment Artist will make a significant direct contribution to the creation of high quality in game environment art as it applies to real-time technology for a AAA console game. This is an opportunity to combine masterful artistry and storytelling with ground-breaking technology on a world class project built in Unreal Engine 5.
It is worth noting that there is no official announcement about the studio’s title yet. Minimal details that can be extracted from the job opening post are known. Other job postings for roles like Lead Artist and Lead Designer were posted on the company’s official portal. This also gives essential details about the unannounced project that the company seems to be working on.
As per the Lead Designer, the job requires someone with “recent experience in character action genre on console or PC platforms”. This means that akin to Redfall, the tile on which the studio was the co-developer, the announced title will also be in the action genre.
While it is not known for sure if the game will be an Xbox Exclusive or a cross-platform release, which is a possibility if a publisher like Bethesda comes on board, while the roles explicitly refer to the title as a “AAA console game, the requirements in terms of experience are also open to accepting individuals who have worked upon video games for consoles and PC.
The studio doesn’t have any projects they have worked on independently, as per their official website, which only highlights projects that have collaborated with other studios. This is precisely why nothing can be said about the expectation one can have from the title, given that there is no track record for the studio’s performance. However, one might suggest that the experience of working with high-profile studios like Arkane and WB games has prepared Gobo to take on this task.
While some may think that the studio’s name is tied to Redfall, which has received overwhelmingly negative responses, making things a little tricky for the developer, they only played a minor part in the game. That can also be seen in the fact that there have been other successful titles on which the studio has worked, like Sony’s Horizon series.
They have also worked on titles like For Honor, Forza Street, and Hogwarts Legacy. Despite mixed critical reception, the last title in the list has seen a lot of success from users for its immersive and spellbinding world.
The current trend in the video game industry has seen a massive change in how studios function as organizations. Multiple studios are acquired, launched, and closed within months, with some, like Campfire Cabal, unable to launch their first title. All of this just means that studios that operate as subsidiaries of parent companies, like Studio Gobo and Keyword Studios, have a very thin margin for error before severe consequences.
