Suicide Squad is about a group of anti-heroes tasked with doing the government’s dirty work. DC has done a lot to boost the team’s popularity in other media, including comics, films, television series, and now games. Rocksteady’s experience with the superhero genre made it the perfect choice to develop a live-service game, and plans for Season 6 and beyond look promising.

Leaks are bound to happen, and one leaker has revealed a handful of characters, including Gorilla Grodd, are making their way into the game in future updates.

Rocksteady’s take on the anti-hero team is expected to have constant support from developers and long-term plans for content output, which seems to be in full effect despite the mixed reception from both fans and critics. Perhaps DC will have better luck and last longer than Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ disappointing attempts with Marvel’s Avengers.

Both games suffer from the same issue: repetitive gameplay, and DC is handling it far worse when each character uses firearms. Perhaps developers can somehow create new and unique fighting styles for Gorilla Grodd that stand out from existing members, and fans will be interested in trying the game once more.

Fans were confused about several elements of the game, including plot holes about Superman’s invulnerability to a Kryptonite shard used by Wonder Woman, which should have killed him but walked away with a few minor injuries. Although the player counts are slowly declining and the indication is not looking well, there is still a chance for Rocksteady to turn the situation around with more diverse characters and unique gameplay.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Shows the Pros and Cons of a Live Service Structure

Fans were skeptical when DC and Rocksteady Studios revealed that the game would be live service and feature a multiplayer aspect, which raised a few eyebrows in the industry, questioning the longevity of the project. The failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is proof enough that Warner Bros. does not have any clue on how to handle its strongest IP, and the fans are tired of it.

The burden of having to come up with new ideas to keep fans interested constantly is the least of DC and Rocksteady’s problems. Figuring out how each character moves and fights is an important aspect, as is making sure they are not just echo characters or reskins that share the same animation.

The superhero genre relies heavily on imagination, and players want to have the feeling of invincibility on their side while they tackle a detailed world with a large sandbox for immersion and a compelling narrative. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is another failed attempt to capitalize on the popularity of comic book characters in this structure, but it could still live a little longer with more engaging gameplay.
