Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Should Take a Few Pointers From James Gunn’s Fun-Loving Film

The 2021 Suicide Squad movie was good, and the game should learn from it.

SUMMARY

  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is Rocksteady's latest title after Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015.
  • Initial thoughts that a lot of fans have about the title aren't positive by any means.
  • If the game, however, tries to learn some methods that were employed by the 2021 movie, it could perhaps do better.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been trending on various social media platforms ever since various clips from the title surfaced. This happened after the game’s closed beta ended, the NDA imposed on the testers was lifted partially, and the game’s marketing campaign began in full force. There are various questionable elements in the game. For example, the game’s live service offering has been less than appealing to most fans.

Some other elements related to the game’s offering, like the fact that all of the playable characters are using guns instead of other weapons they were expected to wield as per comics. There were also two movies based on the characters from the game; James Gunn directed the second one. The reboot also received more appreciation, given the title’s perception by the general public. Taking some pointers from the movie, which did reasonably well, wouldn’t hurt.

Is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Already Inspired by the 2021 Movie?

As revealed, Miller Ross, an individual popular for releasing previous leaks regarding Marvel’s Avengers and some other insider information on the upcoming game on X, has shared information about an in-game animation.

This is what Ross shared on X:

One can refer to the scene in the movie that is very similar to the description by Miller Ross here. In the scene, we see Amanda Waller walking Christopher Smith (Peacemaker) and Robert DuBois (Bloodsport) through the penitentiary and introducing them to the team. Various members seem to be getting out of their cells when called.

Apart from that, there is no confirmation from the studio’s end that any other characters from the 2021 movie will perhaps return or that some elements will be shared between the movie and the upcoming video game.

Apart from the three characters, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark, something doesn’t seem very common when one looks at the title and the movie. When one talks about 2021’s The Suicide Squad, it has various elements that make it fun to watch. For example, the movie was between a reboot and a sequel. It also had some characters almost analogous to those from the first movie.

Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, for example, was strikingly similar to Deadshot, played by Will Smith in the 2016 movie. To make matters worse (or better if one likes hilarious bits in the 2021 movie), there is also Peacemaker, someone incredibly similar to Bloodsport. The movie also pokes fun at elements like this and often makes fun of itself. It doesn’t take itself very seriously. In the process, it also makes fun of the first installment, which is hilarious.

On the other hand, the Rocksteady title tries to accomplish something similar but doesn’t feel quite like it. Now, it is clear that the studio wouldn’t directly base characters on their movie counterparts and keep the humor of the same flower, but if the title can make the player feel like the movie made them feel, a form of media that is just brainless fun, it would be most certainly a win.

The movie also portrayed Task Force X in the most unhinged manner, which is exactly the right way to portray the band of anti-heroes. It had some cheesy lines here and there, but it showed how much the squad members didn’t care.

The movie was rated R and graphically used gore, but it wasn’t intended to make the viewer uncomfortable. It was just used to drive home the fact that these are hardened criminals who aren’t afraid to get nasty. Ideally, the game should be similar; it shouldn’t have gore unnecessarily, but use it where it counts.

Out of the various reveals and overviews the studio has put up, it doesn’t seem to justify its theme as well as the movie did. The game needs to get many things right regarding narrative, world-building, and character development if the studio wants to overshadow the negative sentiment surrounding the game.
