Why Guy Ritchie Never Made the Lobo Movie He Was Supposed To

A Lobo live-action movie has been sitting on the shelves for ages now, and it’s wild to think how the film has jumped from one director to another over the years. Yet still, nothing has come to fruition.

Back in September 2009, Warner Bros. made a big announcement that the director Guy Ritchie was going to direct a live-action Lobo movie as reported by Variety. The story was supposed to be about the villain teaming up with a teenage girl to track down some bad guys on Earth. When asked about his involvement with the movie, he left an extremely cryptic message to MTV,

“Is it a matter of fact that I’m doing it?–I don’t think it’s a matter of fact. In fact, I can tell you it’s not a matter of fact. Isn’t there a fifth amendment or something?”

They were all set to start filming in early 2010 according to the Variety report. But then, things took a turn. Guy Ritchie decided to work on a $543M sequel to his Sherlock Holmes movie, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, instead of Lobo. Although there was talk that the director would return to it after filming the Holmes sequel, he never did.

What followed after that was nothing short of unfortunate for the movie. Fast forward to 2012, and Brad Peyton took over writing and directing the film. They even talked to Dwayne Johnson about playing Lobo, but he ended up leaving the project after a few months to be in Shazam! Instead, they brought in Jason Fuchs to write the script.

Then, in February 2018, Michael Bay jumped on board to direct the movie. He was inspired by the success of Tim Miller’s Deadpool. Eventually, nothing came to be. So, it’s been quite a journey for the Lobo movie, with lots of ups and downs along the way! But the real question now is, will there be a Lobo movie in the near future?

Jason Momoa Wants To Be in a Lobo Movie!

It is no secret that the Aquaman actor, Jason Momoa has declared his love for the iconic villain several times now. Truth be told, casting Momoa as the invincible, blue-skinned, immensely muscular, 7-foot-tall, antihero with a cool motorcycle is as perfect as it gets.

He’s incredibly enthusiastic about portraying the character, already having a clear vision of his appearance if given the chance. Being a longtime fan of Lobo, the actor shared with Screen Rant his insights during an interview. He said,

“What’s Lobo got? He’s got the great chain with the sickle on it, right? He’s got the chain and the hook? Obviously, we’re going to have to do stuff like that. But I’d throw in some kind of custom piece,–I got to think about it, that’s a good question. I would have to think about what I would make.”

Whether the actor will get the chance to play the character remains uncertain, but it’s undeniable that Lobo, DC Comics’ iconic bounty hunter, is an intriguing concept for a movie. As an anti-hero with a violent edge, and notorious for clashes with Superman, Lobo’s fate remains uncertain. Only time can reveal what his fate has in store for him.
