Misha Collins’ Castiel is a truly beloved character, for many reasons that don’t include his relationship with Dean Winchester. The Angel has been called by many as a ball of sunshine and the entire Supernatural fandom is extremely protective over this character. His awkwardness, limited understanding of humanity, and being hilariously funny without realizing it are a few of the many reasons for the admiration that he receives.

It is not too far-fetched to say, that Collins’s character brings light to not only the dark lives of the Winchester brothers but also to the tone of the show itself. With this, it is awful to find out that Collins originally auditioned for the role of a mere demon in the series, only to get cast as the designated angel himself.

Misha Collins Auditioned for the Role of a Demon

When Misha Collins first found out about his audition for the CW classic, Supernatural, he was under the impression that he would be playing the role of a demon. The actor revealed to MovieWeb that the reason for this was the fact that this was what his agent told him and they were told by the producers. Learning this, the actor went and watched an episode of Supernatural that featured a demon.

“I came across it when my agent sent me an audition for a demon on Supernatural earlier this summer. I had an episode of Supernatural Tivoed and I watched it and I saw a demon and I saw that he was kind of snarky and nasty, as we would expect a demon to be. So, I went in and I auditioned for (creator) Eric Kripke and I gave him a very nasty and snarky performance (Laughs).”

Through this, he tried to understand the behavior, characteristics, and personalities of demons in this series, so that he could better perform in the audition. When it came time to give the audition, however, it would seem that the actor got some things wrong about the role he was trying to get.

This Was Not The Case

Misha Collins then told MovieWeb that when he had the audition, he did it to the best of his abilities, trying to channel his inner demon and reflect traits like being spiteful, nasty, and sarcastic. After he was done, however, the producers and the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, gave him a shocking revelation. The actor was told that the role he was auditioning for wasn’t that of a demon.

“He said ‘Great work, except, we are trying to hide from the fans that we’re introducing an angel to the show, so we sent out the audition material as a demon, so it’s actually an angel.’ So he gave me a couple of adjustments to try to make me a little bit less snarky and more angelic and, evidently he liked me because I got the part.”

He was told that the role was that of an angel that they were planning to introduce into the series for a while, as Castiel was initially supposed to get killed off within the span of three episodes, which was changed after the fab reaction that this character received. Upon hearing this and Kripke’s notes on how he could change his performance to better suit this character, the actor made alterations and became the Cas that we know and love today.
