Songs of Taylor Swift and other popular artists are a rage on TikTok. People have been using it to promote funny material or be on the trend with other people dancing to popular music. The platform includes the music catalog of various popular artists and fans use them in their videos to great effect whether they are showing off a skill or dancing.
However, fans wouldn’t be able to use the music of their beloved artists like Taylor Swift anymore as TikTok seems to have won’t be able to Universal Music Group (UMG), the biggest music company in the world will now remove all of the catalogs from TikTok as their deal turned sour.
UMG’s Deal with TikTok Ends in 24 Hours, Fans Are Worried About TikTok’s Future
Universal Music Group holds the rights to the music catalogs of some of the biggest artists in the world right now including Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, and The Weeknd amongst many others. Their music is a big part of TikTok as they are used by users in their videos and through it, various trends start to become popular and this is how TikTok stays relevant in pop culture.
However, TikTok might have dug itself to the ground with its deal with UMG as the company announced in an open letter (on Universal Music.com) that they are removing all its music catalogs from the popular platform. The company accused TikTok of attempting to bully them into “accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth”.
UMG also criticized TikTok for not considering their demands for appropriate compensation for its artists, protections from AI, and safety for its users. Fans have now taken to X to express their thoughts about the matter. Many are of the opinion that this ugly fallout is TikTok’s loss as without any of the music, the platform will become an empty vacuum and might slowly fade away from pop culture. Here are some of the reactions,

I’m sure TikTok will step up and fix it, they can’t afford to lose all those artists’ music, like they just can’t

Please don't, my tiktok needs good music, delete it all and the posts on the platform will be boring

yeah it’s in tiktok’s best interest to comply bc the lawsuits that are going to take place can get NASTY.

As some of the fans have said, it will be a wise decision for TikTok to reach a fair deal with UMG to continue their partnership together. Otherwise, people will lose interest in TikTok and the platform might cease to exist in the near future.

She also pointed out the similarities between her and Swift with regards to how they carry their cat in a backpack. She said, (via People)
“We can’t pretend she was involved. The reality is she was in many ways a great inspiration. “She is a cat lady. She’s got this awesome backpack with a cat in [it] that she walks around with. She loves a good argyle sweater, and there is a sort of unapologetic dorkiness about her. That’s a little bit like what my character is like.”
The film is directed by Matthew Vaugh and features an ensemble cast that includes Henry Cavill, Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film will be released in theatres on February 2, 2024.
