Shawn Levy had a Clear Objective When Making Deadpool & Wolverine

Recently, Shawn Levy gave an interview with ScreenRant, where he went into great detail about his upcoming, highly anticipated film, Deadpool & Wolverine. Having directed the first and second Deadpool films as well, he understands the audience as well as the characters he directs. He started by saying that his goal when making the film was to make sure audiences had a good time watching it. That was what they were aiming for, and he did not want anything else to act as a driving force. Establishing Deadpool and Wolverine’s characters and the movie’s theme were not big concerns for him.

“Yeah, it’s gonna be gnarly. Yeah, it’s going to be funny. That’s a given. But we wanted to build a great time at the theater for audiences. So that’s our goal.”

Shawn Levy Let Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Be in Their Element

While many fans would get upset at such an approach, given how long they have been asking for a movie featuring both Deadpool and Wolverine, Shawn Levy’s intentions behind such an approach were quite interesting. Speaking specifically about the dynamic he was going for with the two superheroes, he seemed to have handed the reins to the actors.

“As far as crafting the Deadpool-Wolverine story, you know, I just felt privileged every day. Cause you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic movie roles.”

Since the movie is not a continuation of Deadpool’s story and focuses on these two characters, he let their interaction establish the theme of the movie. He did not want the movie to feel like Deadpool 3, having a similar feeling to the first two movies.

“So, it’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s a different thing. It’s very much Deadpool and Wolverine and it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.”
