Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the stars of the highly anticipated Marvel film Deadpool 3, first shared the screen in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Serving as the third installment in the X-Men series, the 2009 film primarily focused on Wolverine’s story, chronicling his encounter with William Stryker. The movie also kickstarted Reynolds’ journey as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool.
And the Deadpool star hasn’t forgiven his co-star for their initial collaboration, as despite featuring stars like Jackman as the beloved character Wolverine, it ended up being one of the worst superhero movies of all time.
Ryan Reynolds Held Hugh Jackman Responsible for X-Men Origins Failure
While the duo is now set to star in one of the highly anticipated movies of the year, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman experienced a less-than-successful start to their on-screen collaboration. X-Men Origins, the movie that first introduced Deadpool on the silver screen, faced criticism on various fronts, including its storyline and visual effects.
And the Deadpool star blames his co-star for the film being an “absolute trash fire.” Talking about the movie in an interview with Variety, the actor took a humorous approach to reflect on their initial superhero venture, saying,
“Everyone’s expecting me to eviscerate Hugh Jackman but I will say he was one of the first movie stars I ever worked with, back in 2007, on an absolute trash fire called ‘X-Men Origins Wolverine’ – that one was on him.”
By the time he landed the role of Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds was primarily known for starring in romantic comedies. Jackman, however, enjoyed greater popularity and renown for X-Men movies and acclaimed films like The Prestige along with his work on Broadway productions.
Deadpool 3 Expected to Showcase Wade Wilson & Wolverine’s Dynamic
The upcoming film Deadpool 3 is expected to do what X-Men Origins: Wolverine could not. The transformation of Wade Wilson into Weapon XI has been one of the many critical points of the 2009 film. And fans have been anticipating the Deadpool threequel film to showcase a more accurate portrayal of the dynamic between the two X-Men characters.
Reynolds has developed a keen understanding of his character’s essence from the comic and has successfully brought the character on-screen in the previous two films. Deadpool 3, which also marks their entry into the MCU, offers an opportunity for a more accurate portrayal of the dynamic between the characters, unlike as seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
With Wolverine sporting his iconic yellow costume from the comics, the MCU’s commitment to faithful represent the character may rectify the mistakes of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, offering fans a much-anticipated duo of Deadpool and Wolverine in the upcoming movie.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is available to stream on Disney+.
Deadpool 3 is set to release on July 26, 2024.
