Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible films have been upping the bar when it comes to action scenes. The latest film- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning- Part One, has generated conversation for a scene where Cruise’s Ethan Hunt jumps off a cliff on a motorcycle. It’s a stunt that the actor apparently practiced multiple times before finally going for it.

There was apparently no CGI involved in it at all. One of his long-time co-stars in the franchise praised this ability of the Top Gun actor. He also said that the actor is the real deal in the filmmaking business. So was he directly shading the tentpole superhero films that use tonnes of CGI?

“What you get with the Mission films is the presence of true danger. It delivers an authenticity, which I think is absent from almost every other action franchise because not only are those stunts being done, they’re being done by him (Tom Cruise)… That’s still more exciting to look at than 1,000 CGI aliens coming at you.”

Was that last comment about “1000 CGI aliens” referencing Marvel and DC? After all, those are the two superhero franchises that use CGI in almost every big fight scene. Even the climactic battle in Avengers: Endgame was about the Avengers facing a bunch of CGI monsters. Pegg didn’t take any names. But he complimented Cruise for his ability to understand audiences and always deliver what they want. He said:

“He (Tom Cruise) understands film. He understands the audience. He probably knows more about filmmaking than anyone in the business. He’s been around longer than anyone that’s in power at a studio. He’s the real deal.”

The Shaun of the Dead actor also explained that the stunt where Cruise jumped off the cliff in Dead Reckoning- Part One was one of the few times the megastar has been nervous.

In the interview, Simon Pegg said that Tom Cruise was nervous while trying to pull off a stunt in the upcoming Mission Impossible film. In there, he is on a motorbike and then jumps off a cliff in Norway. The actor talked about how scared the cast and crew were for the Minority Report star. Pegg said:

“I’ve only ever seen him nervous a few times: one, when he was hanging off the plane in Rogue Nation and this time and yeah, he did it, I think, six times in one day. And we were up there when he did it. And it was scary, because we’d see him go off and he’d disappear and we’d just wait and then there would be silence until we heard the canopy and we’d know the chute had opened.”

It’s clear that both Pegg and Cruise are good friends and even greater co-stars who respect each other. They will get to show their camaraderie in the upcoming two Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning films, at least.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning- Part One releases on July 12, 2023.
