Since its December 20, 2019, debut, Netflix’s fantasy series, The Witcher has attracted a sizable audience and a devoted following, thanks to its well-known franchise. But, Henry Cavill’s departure from the show has also garnered media attention for its latest season 3. Fans were shocked by the actor’s choice to leave Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s show.

Because Cavill has a great deal of passion for the character he played, fans believe that he is the only actor who can do justice to the role of Geralt of Rivia.

Given all these changes, you might assume that the writers would now be more focused on the new story and getting ready for season 4. But since this is still The Witcher, there must be some traditional monster hunting for the upcoming game to exist.

But in comparison to one particular beast, those examples are insignificant.

One could argue that The Witcher’s most unsettling monster was one particular ‘terrifying monster’ that stood out among the others. And because this particular creation was so disturbing, the cast of the show seemed to have been shaken by it.

How Henry Cavill Made Anya Chalotra Uncomfortable In The Witcher?

The most tragic and terrifying monster to date appeared in The Witcher season three’s episode two, Unbound, which featured a flesh monster that arose from the ruins of an abandoned castle.

Not everyone on the show was as thrilled by such an atrocity as you might expect. Recently, Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra, who played Ciri and Yennefer, respectively, spoke with Dexerto about the flesh monster.

According to Allan, it

“did actually disturb [her].”

Meanwhile, Chalotra commented:

“Yeah, that is very disturbing […] I’m more disturbed at how, where that came from: the mind, you know, that’s quite a thing to see.”

For those who are unaware, the flesh monster is an experimented-on, mages-created being made of the bodies of tortured girls. The horrifying discovery was made by Geralt (Henry Cavill) in Season 3 Episode 2 when he visited Vuilpanne Castle and found the heads of three girls bound to long, fleshy fibers.

Joey Batey, who played Jaskier, elaborated on how the flesh monster was brought to life through a clever combination of real stunt performers and CGI tricks as he earlier explained.

“So with the flesh monster in particular, the performers were there and had a lot of the prosthetics on them, but then the rest of it was created around it and in post production.”

The Abstract Idea Behind Making The Nightmare Monster

The monster may have been a horrifying addition to the show, but it did more than just frighten the actors. The production team for The Witcher has never worked so closely together to create something so startling. Andrew Laws, a production designer, stated to Mashable:

“It was an extraordinarily collaborative effort between many, many different departments because it was such an abstract idea. It was very different in terms of how that manifests itself in the end. It was probably one of the most collaborative processes in the monster-building world.”

Being soulmates, Anya Chalotra and Henry Cavill’s characters have collaborated and romanced throughout the seasons. The actress once discussed her reaction to the news of the Man of Steel star’s departure with The Telegraph.

Although there were no teary last scenes filmed on set when the cast learned about Cavill’s exit, Chalotra admitted that it was difficult for them to hear that devastating news. To quote her:

“That news was hard to take because he’s family. We’ve been together for five years. So for anyone to leave after working with someone for that long, we’re going to feel that loss.”

The British actress further explained:

“When we are all on set, we’re dedicated to playing these characters and bringing them to life in the best way. And that is exactly what I felt every day from Henry.”

Netflix is currently streaming all the episodes of The Witcher, from seasons 1-3. Also, The Witcher: Blood Origin, a spinoff, is also available on Netflix.
