In The Last Samurai, Tom Cruise‘s acting was so subtle. It was labeled as one of the best movies in his career from his acting point of view. Describing his acting, a stunt expert in a recent interview with Corridor Crew said that everyone was captivated by his performance. He went on to say: 

That’s where he pulls our heartstrings here. This is how he wins over everybody, including the audience as this man who is fighting these demons along with having to be a captive and earn the respect of the people around them, and that’s like one of the biggest things that I care about when it comes to seeing a fight scene is how does it push us forward in the story or make us care about the character.”

Set in Japan during the 1870s, this historical war epic follows the story of Capt. Nathan Algren, played by Tom Cruise, a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country’s first army. Eventually, Algren finds himself unexpectedly accustomed to and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai and gets used to their lifestyle, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds.

The Last Samurai was a huge box-office hit at the time of its release and was nominated for four Oscars at the February 2004 ceremony – Best Supporting Actor (Ken Watanabe), Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Mixing, though won none. 

Tom Cruise Was Almost Killed While Shooting The Last Samurai

Tom Cruise, the undisputed king of action movies, has faced near-death experiences in his career several times. The actor who likes to do his stunts by himself goes to great lengths to make his action more authentic. And in doing so in The Last Samurai, he nearly died.

Cruise almost got decapitated when a stunt went wrong. According to co-star Hiroyuki Sanada, he lost control of his weapon during the production of the film in Taipei, Taiwan, and very nearly cost Cruise his life.

Tom’s neck was right in front of me, and I tried to stop swinging my sword, but it was hard to control with one hand,” he told Today. “The film crew watching from the side all screamed because they thought Tom’s head would fly off.” 

Fortunately, he missed the mark—by just half an inch—and Cruise was spared. and cheated death, as always.
