Tetris is possibly one of the most iconic video games of all time, as it was initially released decades ago in 1988, and since then, it has undergone numerous variations for plenty of newer platforms as the years have gone by. A year after its original launch, the title made its way to the Nintendo Entertainment System and has been a source of enjoyment for many veteran gamers.

However, it was just assumed that the game was an endless experience with no exact finish line in sight, but 34 years after it was originally launched, a teenager residing in the United States has claimed that he has finally managed to reach the title’s ultimate kill screen, signaling the end and meaning that there are no more levels to beat after that.

After More Than Three Decades, the NES Tetris Finds Its First True Archnemesis

For those somehow still unfamiliar with the concept around which Tetris revolves, players have to ensure that the falling blocks that the game throws at them line up perfectly with one another. The moment that happens and the pieces match and fit with each other without the presence of any gaps between them, the blocks disappear from the screen, and the total score increases.

It may sound extremely simple and straightforward without many layers attached to it, but it is actually surprising to know that the Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game has never been completely beaten before.

Well, a teenager from Oklahoma in the United States is now claiming that he has fully beaten the Nintendo Entertainment System edition of Tetris, which basically makes him the very first person to achieve this feat. It is definitely an amazing achievement because it has been more than three decades since the game was originally released, and since then, not a single human being has been able to reach the title’s final kill screen.

The potentially extraordinary teenager is called Willis Gibson, who goes by the name of Blue Scuti on YouTube, which is where he shared his huge gaming milestone.

Apparently, the original Tetris on the NES only lasts up until level 157, which Gibson managed to achieve, as right at that moment, the game just crashed, showing nothing but the unexpected kill screen to signal the ultimate finish line. To make the once unachievable feat even more impressive, Blue Scuti has only just entered his teenage years, as he is still 13 years old, and naturally, it took a lot out of him to beat the game.

Upon becoming the supposed first person to complete the old school title, Gibson understandably stated that he could not feel his fingers and that he felt like he was “going to pass out.”

Even Tetris itself had to officially acknowledge Blue Scuti on his massive gaming achievement.

Gibson, aka Blue Scuti, managed to beat Tetris in just 38 minutes, and the gaming milestone proved to be so significant that even the official Classic Tetris channel on YouTube had to acknowledge it. Since the game was released back in 1989, it was always a misconception among gamers that one could only reach level 29 of the NES title, which was still believed up until a few years ago.

It just felt like a video game that could “theoretically” go on forever, but Scuti has shown that one can play it as long as it literally cannot continue any further and that everything has an eventual finish line, no matter how endlessly far it may seem.

Even before Blue Scuti made a name for himself by being the first person to actually beat Tetris, the 13-year-old was also the semi-finalist at CTWC 2023, which makes the whole situation more applaudable. The official Classic Tetris YouTube channel stated that what Gibson has achieved “has never been done before” and that he literally broke and defeated the NES game.

On an extremely heartfelt and sad note, Scuti’s father unfortunately passed away a couple of weeks ago, on December 14, 2023, and Gibson “dedicated” his victory to him.

Tetris finally getting beaten is undoubtedly one of the most wholesome stories to come out of the video game industry in recent times.
