Even as Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson’s intense rivalry continues to vaporize the air around them, the fans can hardly do anything but keep their curiosities in check as the duo carries forth the Fast family tradition over a globe-trotting adventure and a couple of bottles of Corona together. With Fast X confirming the two Hollywood stars’ reunion, the saga that is now coming to an end posits several questions that seek to ask the whereabouts of Hobbs as world-ending plans were in motion and why he is suddenly back in the picture.

But considering this world belongs to the Fast family, none of these questions need to find a logical answer and are simply taken for what it is: good fiction material and a high-octane adventure saga.

Fast X Director Reunites Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel

For one last world-ending chapter, DSS Luke Hobbs and the Fast family patriarch, Dom Toretto, reunite to take down the big bad together. The villainous Dante still remains at large and as depicted by the events of Fast X‘s cliffhanger finale, he is still intent on bringing down the wrath of vengeance and destruction upon the Toretto clan until not a single soul is alive. As the fate of the Fast family now hangs in the balance, the re-entry of Hobbs into the orbit gives the fandom a new cause to rally behind. However, it was all made possible by the efforts of the director, Louis Leterrier.

Very little is known about the reason that was strong enough to shake even the firm and resolute foundation of Dwayne Johnson‘s beliefs about not stepping his foot back into the franchise again. The very public and very dirty laundry that Johnson and Diesel aired for the public to witness has now become a stain in the otherwise picture-perfect image of the clan. However, all of that changed when the mid-credits rolled at the end of Fast X and Hobbs stepped back into the ballpit. Leterrier, in the aftermath of the premiere, only claimed:

“The peace treaty… I kind of [brokered it]. We all did. Ultimately, the movie did… we reached out to Dwayne and his team, and said, ‘Just come and watch the movie. You have to love the movie first.’ It was very smooth, and frankly, as a fan, I could not conceive continuing the franchise without either Dwayne or Gal Gadot.”

However, just like the inexplicable law that forbids anybody loyal to the Fast family from dying or staying dead, this phenomenon also stays an unexplained mystery with the director hardly giving any fodder for the fans and the media to chew on.

Dwayne Johnson’s Past Comments About the Fast Family

Before Fast X miraculously turned the world on its head by bringing in Momoa’s psychopathic villain and making Cipher an ally (blasphemy!), the earlier hard-earned allegiance between The Rock and Vin Diesel‘s characters in the Fast world seemed to crumble and fall apart when the pair butted heads on the sets of The Fate of the Furious. In the aftermath, nothing could convince the two to be on the same page even as Vin Diesel repeatedly reached out in private and publicly for the co-star to come back for the sake of family and for seeing the saga through to the end as a unit.

Dwayne Johnson however stated, “I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but there was no chance I would return.” After Diesel mentioned Paul Walker, their fallen comrade, in a last-ditch attempt to convince Johnson to return, The Rock demolished the actor in a scathing post that labeled him as “manipulative.” Now, as Fast X accelerates the entire fandom toward the inevitable showdown and a grand, epic finale, it’s only right that both Johnson and Gadot would be here for the end.

Fast X is playing in theatres worldwide.
