Not just the number, The Sandman also has a positive viewer response and good critic reviews. The cast of the show Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt gave out their best performance.

However, even after all this, Netflix may not have plans to renew The Sandman season 2.

Neil Gaiman Reveals The Sandman May Not Have Another Season

The author of the original novel, Neil Gaiman, revealed that Netflix may not renew season 2 of the series despite its overwhelming popularity.

The show is based on a novel of the same name and took years of work to bring to the screen. It was originally adapted as a movie, but when it did not work out, Netflix decided to bring it as a series in 2019.

It follows the lord of dreams, Dream, who is trapped by a human. When he finally manages to escape his 100-year-long imprisonment, he finds out that his kingdom is no longer the same. He plans to restore his kingdom and finds out who the real antagonist in the story is.

After the last episode of the series, a bonus episode, called ‘Dream of a Thousand Cats‘ and ‘Calliope‘ was released on August 19. An unexpected episode quickly boosted interest in the series, and viewers started hoping for more.

The Reason for Not Renewing The Sandman Season 2

As already stated, it was planned as a movie, but when it did not work out, Netflix stepped in and decided to release it as a series. When this happened, Netflix itself had to invest a certain amount into the production of the show, whose production cast was already high.

The author Neil Gaiman replied to a tweet saying, “Because Sandman is a really expensive show. And for Netflix to release the money to let us make another season we have to perform incredibly well. So yes, we’ve been the top show in the world for the last two weeks. That still may not be enough.”

There is Still Hope for Season 2

Netflix has not renewed the show for now, but according to Gaiman’s tweet, the series has to perform incredibly well to have another season. So, considering its success there might be a slight chance that we get to see The Sandman season 2.

But the author also said in his tweet, “That may still not be enough.” This hints toward some sort of disagreement by Netflix for The Sandman season 2. However, Netflix has not made any announcement, neither about its cancellation nor about renewal.

The Sandman was a very expensive series to produce. The author said that the production of the show cost a lot, and it would need to make the best impression on people and Netflix to get a second season.

Netflix’s Financial Struggle

According to the author, the show needs to hold its position at the top for at least a month, to get a renewal. However, it has not even been one month since its release, so there are still chances for it to get its renewal.

It’s been two weeks since the show’s release, and it has maintained its top position. For now, if it manages to do it a little longer, The Sandman season 2 may also get a confirmation.

Even after it gets the top spot for a month or more, it may still not help it to renew the series, as its production cost is very high, and Netflix has not been at its best for the past few months. With the continuous loss of its subscribers, the streaming platform is suffering financially.

However, it has never stopped Netflix from having sequels to its most-watched shows. Most of the shows that get ranked in Netflix’s top 10 get a sequel and end up being a franchise, and there are multiple examples of it.

The same may happen with The Sandman as well, and considering the response, the series has received, there is no chance that Netflix will not work on another season. Well, we will have to wait and see if there will be a season 2 or not.

The Sandman is available to stream on Netflix.
