It is never easy to say goodbye, and Charmed viewers were particularly forced to do so when Shannen Doherty’s character had to leave the show. In the fantasy drama television show, the actress portrayed Prue Halliwell (seasons 1-3), the eldest of the three Halliwell siblings. But she only made a brief appearance on Constance M. Burge’s program.
The story revolved around three sisters known as ‘The Charmed Ones’, who were the most powerful good witches of all time. They used their ‘Power of Three’ to protect helpless people from demons and other dangerous foes.
With the success of Charmed, Doherty and her co-star, Alyssa Milano, who played Phoebe Halliwell, the third oldest sister, intensified their rivalry. The latter starred in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Commando.
Rumors of on-set fights and interpersonal conflicts regularly appeared in tabloids.
Shannen Doherty’s Behind-the-Scenes Feud with Charmed Co-Star Alyssa Milano
Charmed, the acclaimed fantasy drama created by Constance M. Burge, made television history by holding viewers’ attention for eight seasons. However, the dynamic duo of Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano got into a contentious argument behind the scenes despite the magic and sisterly bonds they shared.
The Charmed set was rocked by this backstage feud, which ultimately caused Doherty to abruptly leave the show.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Doherty, now 52, said:
“There was so much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work. I’m 30 years old, and I don’t have time for drama anymore. To me, it’s sort of whatever. I’ll miss Holly [Marie-Combs] a lot.”
It was allegedly the sour relationship between Doherty and Milano that was problematic. The latter once informed E! News:
“There were times when I’d come in and say, ‘Good morning, Shannen’, and she didn’t say anything to me. And there were times when she’d come in and say, ‘Good morning, Alyssa,’ and I wouldn’t say anything to her.”
The two initially got along like a house on fire when Charmed began filming, but things quickly seemed to go south.

Alyssa Milano Admitted To Causing ‘A Lot’ Of On-Set Tension With Shannen Doherty
Alyssa Milano, who played Shannen Doherty’s co-star on the WB series Charmed, once admitted that she was “a lot” of the source of the on-set tension that resulted in the latter’s exit more than 20 years ago. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Milano stated:
“I would say we are cordial. You know, I could take responsibility for a lot of our tension that we had. I think a lot of our struggle came from feeling that I was in competition rather than it being that sisterhood that the show was so much about. And I have some guilt about my part in that.”
After Doherty left, the Commando actress spoke with Entertainment Weekly, saying:
“I think it’s hard when you put two very different people together. I’m very laid-back and passive. I have my Buddha. I come in here and meditate. [Shannen’s] got a lot of energy, she’s very headstrong, she wants to get the job done.”
When asked about the fourth season in a 2001 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Milano reported:
“I think it’s hard when you put…[long pause]…two very different people together. I’m very laid-back and passive. I have my Buddha. I come in here and meditate. [Shannen’s] got a lot of energy, she’s very headstrong, she wants to get the job done.”
The Little Italy actress responded to Doherty’s exit during the same interview, saying:
“I think it’s unfortunate that she left, and that she needed to bad-mouth everyone involved and the audience. She sounds really angry. I just hope I didn’t contribute to that anger.”
Anyway, Shannen Doherty last appeared as Chief Connelly in James Cullen Bressack’s action-thriller Hot Seat, which was released in 2022. It also starred Kevin Dillon and Mel Gibson.
Meanwhile, Alyssa Milano’s recent film appearance was in Brazen, a 2022 thriller directed by Monika Mitchell.
You can stream Charmed on Amazon Prime Video.
